Residents describe a crowded holiday season as relatives travel from East Haven Greenwich and beyond to spend Christmas at Lake Gertrude Manor and nearby homes. Several families plan New Year visits and Bermuda Bermuda races. Santa visits a pre Christmas party with local children and extended kin.
The Monday Social club held a Christmas party for members and husbands with carols and bingo. Tables were festively decorated with poinsettias Brazilian peppers and mini Santas. A lighted Christmas tree sat near a large gift table.
Garden Spot notes vandas thrive in bright light and warm temps. They favor charcoal mix with hen manure, watered daily in summer, fed about every three weeks, and tolerate short cold snaps if protected. Varieties described include V Miss Joquin, V Sanderiana, and V Nellie Morley.
Results from Lake County Duplicate Bridge at Mount Dora show in N S first place E A Nimnitz and William Clifton, second Roland Cooper, third Al Schrupp, in E W Virginia Clark placed third and Mrs Marshall Collins fourth during the 10 point monthly master point play.
Lakes and Hills Garden Club hosted a successful bazaar and card party last Friday drawing over 400 guests. Mrs Daniel Bishop noted all circles contributed articles this year, aiding the event’s success.
The approaching marriage of Miss Harriet Binney Baker Learned, granddaughter of Mrs. Mary Duncan Learned of 226 Ninth Avenue, is announced by Mr. and Mrs. Fra D. Learned. She will wed Robert M. Stevenson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Stevenson of Fort Myers, at Plymouth Congregational Church in Coconut Grove on January 23 with Rev. Dwight D. Davis officiating.
The Creative Writers group will meet on Wednesday January 6 at the Mount Dora Library. Topics include Foreign ones Continued and Firsts.
The Tangerine Garden club met at Mrs. Charles Fenby’s home in December. Mrs. Ver non L. Conner spoke on the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs history and the planned Meade Gardens headquarters in Winter Park. The club voted $100 toward the project, earning a place on the scroll beside clubs giving $500. Lakes and Hills Garden club leads that tier.
