The Mount Dora Jaycees staged a large Christmas parade amid 80 degree heat with floats bands baton twirlers scouts and more. The event drew praise for its quality and community spirit as local restaurants and anecdotes highlighted the day's festivities.
Eighty units marched on Donnelly Street in 80 degree weather for Mount Dora's largest Christmas parade. Sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, participants came from Orlando Wildwood South Sumter Groveland Leesburg and nearby Golden Triangle cities. Prizes awarded in two categories with First Baptist Church of Sorrento winning best non professional float and Central Florida Show Dolls taking the twirling trophy.
MPO Videotronics Inc of New York paid IceHouse Players in Mount Dora 600 after filming a TV commercial on Mount Dora area ranches near Sorrento. About 100 extras, some self contributing part of their day pay, gathered for ground and air shoots including a parade preview. The parade judged on Donnelly Street featured local officials led by Sheriff Willis V. McCall with Mount Dora leaders and city staff in attendance.
Mount Dora Jaycees and the Chamber sponsor a no entry fee Christmas Decorating Contest with three categories Religious Festive and Children. Homes will be judged this Saturday Dec 18 after 6 p m with entry forms due by Friday Dec 17 at the Chamber office. Prizes awarded at the Old Fashioned Community Sing Dec 20 at 7 30 at City Hall. Choir members should wear robes.
Only 27 percent of 1 762 registered voters cast ballots at the Community Building for Mount Dora’s municipal election. Incumbents Tyrone Parker Mrs John A Murray and Thomas Houser won re election along with G Robert Pearson to a two year council term. Mayor Jesse M Willmott and Park Commissioner W G Shipley were re elected unopposed. Parker led with 353 votes followed by Murray 343 Houser 289 Pearson 248 Dodson 212 and Cibula 201. Willmott 365 Shipley 322. Swearing in is planned for mid January at the city offices.
