Planters Favor Blacklee Melon for Next Season
Growers in the Leesburg area show strong interest in planting the Blacklee melon after reports from the Watermelon and Grape Investigations lab and Florida Grower. Developed by Dr. M N Waler and released near Gainesville, Blacklee is long and blocky with dark green rind and deep red flesh. It resists wilt disease thanks to soil carryover traits, enabling planting on land previously used for watermelons. One grower used 32 acres on five-year-old land and shipped fifteen carloads.
