Fireproofing Christmas Trees by Water Keep Live
The U S Forest Products Laboratory at Madison Wisconsin finds keeping spruce and balsam fir trees in water is the most practical method to reduce fire hazard and preserve color and needles. Cut the trunk diagonally above the original end and place the tree in water throughout display. Watered trees resist candle or match fires, though cannot withstand large heat sources. Chemical treatments were tried but water remains the best low cost option.
