Mount Dora Middle School faces holiday prep as a freezer breakdown thawed 200 pounds of turkey. Mrs. Juanita Carter and her team race to cook the meat to prevent spoilage. Meanwhile Mrs Hulda Price reports two men removing a rodent from a tree, one worker joking about a dinner.
A defective heater started a fire at 11:15 p.m. Thanksgiving night in a house at 432 E Florida Ave East Town. The heater spilled kerosene on the floor, causing damage to furnishings and the roof estimated over $500. No injuries were reported by Mount Dora Fire Department.
Fifty Christmas lanterns purchased over the past two years decorate Mount Dora streets this season. Red and green bulbs supplement downtown coach lamps, with new decorations planned for City Hall.
With the annual Christmas parade less than two weeks away the Mount Dora Jaycees appeal for area donations to cover costs. Band and other expenses have risen dramatically and organizers fear cancelation if funds are insufficient. Donations may be sent to Mount Dora Jaycees or arranged by calling Carter Moore at 383-6878.
Mount Dora Junior Chamber of Commerce and Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce sponsor a Christmas lighting contest open to area residents. Judging occurs after 6 p.m. December 18 in three categories including a children’s design. Entry blanks due by 5 p.m. December 17 from City Hall or by mail. Prizes awarded December 20 at City Hall during the old fashioned community sing.
