Campaign Nearing Election Sees Sparse City Races

As December 14 ballots approach in Mount Dora, four City Council seats, mayoral race, Park Commission races, and a local annexation question draw limited campaigning. Incumbents Champion Wason and Schubert seek re election. mayoral challenger is Gordon Conboy. Warren Morgan not seeking re election. Park seats go to French Harris Moss with French and Harris incumbents. Annexation covers Sylvan Shores North Lake Gertrude and Helm Road areas. Lions Club event to discuss candidate views. School Chiefs Attend Annual Fall Conference

Elementary school principals from 500 Florida schools gather in Fort Lauderdale for a three day fall conference. Symposium speakers include Dr. Malcolm M. Provus of the National Education Association and Bernice McCullar of the Georgia Department of Education. The program focuses on creative teaching, learning, and the ideal school environment.

Mount Dora Band Competes In District Marching Contest

Mount Dora High School band directed by Byron Nichols will perform at the District 7 Marching Contest at Leesburg High School athletic field this Saturday. Gates open 6 30 p m with marching at 7 p m adults pay 1 and children 50 cents. A band boosters campaign will seek local support in the next two weeks.

Memorial Services Held for Karnes Couple in Florida

Memorial services were held Thursday November 18 for Mr and Mrs John Karnes of Winter Park who died in the Yarmouth Castle disaster. Mrs Karnes was the niece of J S Banks longtime resident of Mount Dora.

Change in Date for Florida Symphony Concert in Mount Dora

Kiwanis Club of Mount Dora announced a new concert date for the Florida Symphony Orchestra from January 11 to January 4 at the Community Building. Refunds will be offered to ticket holders. fewer than 200 tickets remain. The program is “A Touch of Vienna” conducted by Henry Mazer with a daytime children’s concert precede the evening show. Tickets are sold through local chambers and banks or from Kiwanis members.

Memory Feats Spice Clinic Demonstration at Courtesy Clinic

At the final meeting of the Courtesy Clinic sponsored by the Merchant's Association, Alfred C. Newman of Leesburg and his daughter Jan presented a memory demonstration. They showed memory techniques with blackboard charts and noted that about 19 minutes a day of practice can improve memory skills.

Emma O'Hara Dies at 103 Mount Dora’s Oldest Resident

Mount Dora pays tribute to Emma Ethel O'Hara aged 103 born in Pennsylvania who moved to Mount Dora in 1911. She was a charter member of First Baptist Church and Woman's Club of Mount Dora and a longtime Lady Maccabee. Survived by daughter Lottie Amanda and granddaughter Marion Haas, funeral Tuesday at Garden Chapel Orlando.

Wetherington Named Temporary Head of Triangle Toastmasters

Tom Wetherington was elected temporary president of the Triangle Toastmasters Club at a Tuesday meeting. Dr. R. B. Whitney and Arch Laney became vice presidents, with Charles Pettyjohn secretary, Bob Bennett treasurer, and Al Rehbaum III sergeant at arms. Dr. Spencer Way of Orlando led a Toastmasters International group demonstrating self improvement activities. The gathering occurred in the Community Room of Mount Dora's First National Bank.

Barracks Election Slated On Dec 8

World War I Barracks 3227 of Mount Dora and the auxiliary meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday December 8 in the American Legion Hall for an election and installation of officers. Sixth District Commander W B Davis of Inverness will be the installing officer. Dues for 1966 are payable December 1 and must be paid by January 1 1966 to keep the Blood Bank operative. The Barracks will participate in the Annual Christmas Parade on December 11 and volunteers are invited to drive in the parade.

Angel Theme Chosen for Mount Dora BPW Christmas Meet

The Mount Dora Business and Professional Woman's Club plans a Wednesday 6:45 p.m. Christmas dinner at Garden Gate with an angel theme. Members will donate 1 to the Symphony Orchestra Fund for Kiwanis children programs, and deliver gifts and a Mayo Cottage charity donation.
