Mount Dora Kiwanis members and visitors welcome Dr. A. B. Whitman D. D. S. as today's speaker at the Villa Dora Hotel luncheon. The event follows Sunshine Jelks' engaging program, with Whitman expected to address child welfare and Kiwanis service.
The Mount Dora Baptist church concluded one of its most successful revivals with about thirty new members joining by profession of faith. Sunshine Jelks of Miami led a forceful appeal, signaling lasting impact on the community and planned baptism for all new members Sunday afternoon.
The Senior B Y P A plans a Breezy Point picnic Friday night. Mrs Harry Bouterse visits the pastorium with her children Harry Jr and Dorothy Ann. Montverde School in Lake County starts its 19th year on September 8 under President H P Carpenter and a strong faculty. The opening includes D A R Hall the new girls dormitory built by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The school offers expanded programs in Music Agriculture Home Economics Commercial Auto Mechanics Building and Carpentry on 200 acres with 14 buildings and a 22 acre orange grove.
Word reached Mrs Quixley that Miss Marion Abele of Atlanta while visiting her parents at Windemere Orange County was severely injured in an Orlando automobile accident. She entered a hospital in Orlando for treatment causing concern among friends in Mount Dora where she previously edited the Mount Dora Topic.
The Woman's Christian Temperance Union schedules a meeting at the Baptist church on Monday September 1 at 3 00 PM. Local members are invited to attend and discuss union activities.
The Believers in Mount Dora Division of the Chamber of Commerce hosts a Saturday night entertainment on August 30 with the Carolina Aces Orchestra from Ocala providing music from nine to twelve. Prizes for dancing and best dressed couples are offered plus a drawing at Loveless Cash grocery. Officials plan future events and urge parking and storefront decorations downtown.
Adam Hazelwood born August 26 1840 in Beighton England moved to Wisconsin with his family, served three years in the Twentieth Wisconsin Regiment, and was discharged in Galveston Texas 1865. He and his wife moved to Mount Dora in 1916 where he led civic church and fraternal life and served as mayor. He celebrated his 90th birthday with a large reception.
On Labor Day Monday September 1 places of business will close all day. The public is urged to enjoy the holiday cautiously to prevent accidents and preserve the day’s pleasures.
Senator Arthur Capper awards silver and bronze medals to the two top 4-H club girls in the National Canning Contest at Shenandoah Iowa under the Household Science Institute. The prizes join 470 total awards worth 4250 dollars. grand prize is 600 dollars. Open to all women and girls with entries in fruit vegetable or meat divisions and they will be exhibited until October 1.
Frank Morley of Mount Dora Florida, 19, cut his previous record nearly in half by completing the New York to Miami outboard motorboat course in 14 days 17 hours. He faced a broken motor shaft off Jersey and again near Virginia capes, sleeping through a rough night before salvage. The time was officially recorded by C. W. The Mount Dora Public School resumes Monday September 8 at 9 o clock with a opening assembly in the school auditorium. Principal D D Roseborough will be in his office Friday and Saturday the 5th and 6th to confer with patrons and pupils regarding school matters. The faculty is complete and ready for an excellent term.
Mount Dora Post and Auxiliary hosted a large picnic at Rock Springs with guests from Leesburg Tavares and Eustis. A crowd of about 175 enjoyed chicken pileau salads breads and desserts as volunteers supplied water plates and seating. leaders praised the committees and Auxiliary workers.
Mount Dora city booklets are prepared for distribution. Interested residents may bring or mail names and addresses to the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce, and copies will be mailed from that office. Mailing rates are sealed 4 cents and unsealed 1 cent.
J J West presented a new flag to the Mount Dora Post of the American Legion for Donnelly Park. The Park Commission provided space for a flagpole, replacing a ragged old banner. Chief Palmer, an ex Navy man, ceremonially burned the worn flag per national code.
George J White Jr arrived Monday evening to a warm Mount Dora welcome. The newly credited citizen brought a radiant smile as he celebrated with local Believers in Mount Dora and Chamber of Commerce events. Soda fountains ran busy all day as the town marked the census addition. President White wrapped up a Tuesday night meeting with brisk dispatch, and a hopeful Wednesday morning awaited his return to town.
The Park Grill will open this Sunday with Mrs. J. W. McGee and Mrs. Edgar E. Stokes as managers. The first meal will be served next Sunday at noon and friends are invited to patronize the Grill with a cordial welcome.
The craft designed by George Crouch and 16 feet long drew many observers at the Middletown Yacht Club dock as Morley, who had visited earlier, prepared for the start in New York.
