County Chamber Backs Telephone Plan At Board Meeting

The Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce board endorsed Florida Telephone Corp proposal for county wide toll free extended area service. The firm announced plans to offer the service countywide pending approval by the Florida Public Service Commission.

East Town Negro Community Grows From late 1800s Settlement

East Town in Mount Dora developed from late 19th century settlement into a thriving Black community. Key figures Dr. Duncan Milner and Earl Gilbert helped establish housing, a clubhouse site, and Pine Street ball park. Rosenwald Foundation aided a new school replacing the 1922 fire loss, with ongoing recreation funding and road paving projects. Churches shaped community life, led by Rev. N. R. McNair who built Bethel Free Methodist Church in 1949, and a federation of seven churches expanding to Tavares Deland and Apopka.

Alfred Rehbaum Sr. founded Mount Dora Hardware Co. fifty years ago this month in Mount Dora. An advertising gimmick using a wagon wheel and a nail helped launch early business, aided by roadside signs from Mount Dora to Zellwood and Sorrento. Rehbaum grew the store, served as bank founder and director, and saw his family expand the business with Al Jr. and Sonny joining.
