Tom Peters 3rd administrator of Waterman Memorial Hospital spoke to the Mount Dora Kiwanis Club about hospital origins and current counts. He traced the first U S hospital to 1755 Philadelphia under a royal charter, noted Philadelphia General Hospital survives, and cited 437 BC religious groups as early providers. Peters said 6 786 hospitals operate in the United States with 81 percent community or general, eight percent psychiatric, 11 percent special. He urged public understanding and local financial support for hospital expansion and medical fields.

Tortugas Sooty and Noddy Terns Study Through Expeditions
Between 1937 and 1941 twelve thousand Aon and Noddy Terns were tagged during annual Tortugas pilgrimages. The practice resumed in 1959 after a pause, with forty four thousand birds tagged in the last three years, totaling over fifty thousand across eight years. Researchers seek to learn wintering sites and life histories while noting that many banded young birds have not been recaptured to date.
Registration Of Boats In County Opens In Tavares
County Tax Collector Paul H. Reed announced 1961 63 boat registrations are available at his Tavares office. All boats must be re registered during August with proof of previous registration. New owners need a certificate of transfer or transfer via the State Board of Conservation. A blue and orange Florida decal marks re registration and must be placed on the boat. No registration cost change. Renewals by mail offered.

Eligibility Time Limits Reduced On Social Security
New amendments cut the work period needed for retirement benefits. Orlando district manager Byron R. Patton says about 160000 older workers and families become eligible for cash benefits starting August. Credits counted in three month quarters since 1936 allow early eligibility for self and survivors with reduced work requirements. Contact the Orlando Social Security office for details.

Recapture Efforts Highlight Tortugas Bird Banding Work
The expedition reports banding birds aged 18 to 24 years with a juvenile band from August 1937. Studies at Dry Tortugas cover botany and insect life, linking to animal life, while documenting ferns feeding on over 80 fish species. In 1960 North America’s first Black Noddy record on South Atlantic shores was noted. this year a Noddy was seen but not captured for banding despite efforts.
