Colonel Will L. Wood Ordered to Fort Benning

Colonel Will L. Wood of the U S Army is ordered to Fort Benning Georgia for two weeks from May 4 to May 18. Fort Benning is described as the largest infantry training school in the world and the reason for the call is not explained as the regular training season starts in June.

New Residence Underway for Brown Family on Mount Dora Road

Local contractor J. G. Ray is building a brick veneer two story house with eight rooms for Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Brown in Lake County Groves near Sund Set Hill. Foundation and basement done, framing to start, occupancy planned for early fall with modern utilities including oil furnace and wired plumbing. Ray also has lake contracts at Zellwood and May term of Circuit Court convening in Tavares on Monday with J. B. Koonce presiding.

Kiwanis Frolic Theatre Benefit Tonight

The Kiwanis Club hosts two showings at 7 15 and 9 00 pm featuring the film I'll Love You Always with Nancy Carroll and Gene. Admission is 35 cents for adults and 10 cents for children, tickets from Kiwanis members or the Chamber of Commerce office. Proceeds support local Boy Scouts and underprivileged children.

Burglaries Strike Eleventh Ave Homes Tuesday Night

Two more house entries were added to ongoing burglaries in the Eleventh Avenue area. Mrs. R. W. Dickson and E. G. Pearce homes were entered from Eleventh Avenue. Wentworth residence also hit. Stolen included $13, a Ford key, 60 cents, a diamond filigree pin, and a lock box with papers and coins. A recovered H. W. Fish gun ties to linked cases.

Deep Sea Fishing Trip Yields Large Grouper Catch

Mr and Mrs James Spooner along with Mrs Spooner’s mother and Mr and Mrs Sidney Lane fished Friday at Nokomis in the Gulf and caught over 100 pounds of grouper plus several kingfish the largest over 13 pounds. Mr and Mrs Alfred Rehbaum are on a Gulf coast fishing trip this week with a Pullman trailer for a multi day stay.

Mount Dora Bowling Club Beats Orlando Then Loses Return Match

The Mount Dora bowling club earned a 45 to 21 win over Orlando on April 17 at their home rink with Sprague Eckis Kirby and Gavin securing a 17 to 10 score and Thomas Niles Converse and Wilmot posting a 28 to 11 win. On April 22 Orlando won 39 to 30 in a return match as Sprague Wilmot Eckis and Stevens Carrington Lubee team lost 16 to 15 while Thomas Ganin Whitten Niles and Smedley Allen Marion Walls prevailed 24 to 14. Club members celebrated two donations with a house flag gifted by President Thomas and a large U S flag installed by Councilman Jerue.

Primary department to hold closing day program

The primary department of the public school will hold a closing day program Friday afternoon May 3 at 1 o clock in the school auditorium. It will present a brief synopsis of the year’s work with readings songs and recitations from each grade. A Child Health Day acrostic will be given in observance of May 1. All patrons are invited to attend and following the program parents may visit the classrooms.

Swap Shop Sold To Geo W Coffin

Mr George W Coffin has purchased the Swap Shop from Mrs Alton Linn and reopened it this week. The shop has enjoyed a wide patronage under the former management of J E Mattocks and Mrs Linn who ran it successfully until her death recently. Coffin will continue the business, taking large articles on consignment and trading for or buying smaller items.

St Johns River Conference to Meet in Miami

The St Johns River Conference will meet in Miami on May 1. Rev Perry B James will attend and A J Waltz is elected lay delegate with James Simpson as alternate. Bishop Frederick T Kenney will preside at the White Temple in a session marking his retirement after eight years of service in the area.
