Mr J T Porter of Paris Tennessee purchased a Sepsis Warpotant site lot with 150 feet frontage and 300 feet depth near Lake Dora. He plans a winter home with construction to start next fall, after being impressed by the area. Sale handled by A C Quixley Realty Company.
Lake County lawmakers are described as diligent and focused on state and district work. George F. Westbrook chairs Rules and Calendar and serves on Motor Vehicles, with prior service as County Commissioner. Thos H. Cooley chairs National Guard and Military Affairs and sits on numerous panels. John L. Fahs represents the county on Finance, Public Health, Highways, Cities, Conservation, and other committees.
The Art League closed its season with H N Gallie presenting England slides from the University of Florida and Carnegie Institute. Musical numbers by Mrs Garvin and readings by Miss Cornelia Ashley enriched the program, including Home Thoughts from Abroad and London traffic sounds. Sketching class meets Saturday at 3:00 PM at Community church to sketch and picnic with Gallie offering criticisms.
Dr. A. M. Brodie and Mrs. Brodie travel to Orlando where he will remain a few weeks at Orange General Hospital for observation and treatment. Friends wish him a complete and speedy recovery. Mrs. Brodie has secured a room near the hospital.
In Dr Brodie’s absence, Dr Francis A Poole will preach Sunday morning at the Community Church on the subject The Effect on Personality. Dr Bradley will preach the following Sunday.
The Mhankins, who have spent the season at the Fletcher Crane residence on Alexander Street, have rented the home again and will return next winter. Friends hope Mount Dora becomes their permanent home.

Their final Lake County game drew the largest crowd ever seen there, against the former World’s Cup Detroit Tigers. They open the International League season in Jersey City on April 22. Henry Ford promotes a nationwide return to farming and asserts wealth derives from the soil.
Kiwanis and Mount Dora clubs plan an inter club meeting in Leesburg with lunch at 12 15. Carlisle Rogers District Lieutenant Governor spoke on Kiwanis ideals. Paul R Mahony urged Florida game and fish conservation and club membership in the Florida Conservation Council. Geraldine Richardson guest of honor and attendance prize awarded to Fletcher Crane.
H L Pringle of Leesburg announced Montverde reached its quota as the eighth community. Mount Dora leads with 178 members, followed by Eustis 146 and Clermont 134. County totals top 853 as chambers boost state leadership. Plans include Armistice Day events, Grape Growers Show, and a county Diamond League.

H W Harlow escaped injury when his car was sideswiped by Willie Glenn of Quincy Florida Monday morning at Highland Avenue and Camp Street. Glenn, en route to Miami with two others, clipped the left front fender, struck a fire plug, and broke it, then crashed through the fence. He paid a $23 fine to Mayor Simpson to cover the fire plug replacement and related costs.
A tenant cottage on Mr. A. G. Moss property at Lake Gertrude burned Saturday night. The house and furniture were a total loss though the cottage was unoccupied at the time. origin of the fire is unknown. Loss is understood to be partly covered by insurance.
George Malone of Malone Realty Co closed the sale of an orange grove at Umatilla owned by R O Jasperson of Milwaukee Wisconsin to Dr M Kennedy secretary of the Florida State Game and Fish Commission in Tallahassee. Malone notes strong demand for groves and says other deals are ready to close.
Mount Dora Hi Y Club held a meeting at the High School and elected officers for 1937 38. Bayard Roberts was named president with William Turrentine as vice president and Edward Kimball as secretary. Curtis Minkley is treasurer Theo Green chaplain and Richard Shipes sergeant at arms. Several members will attend the Hi Y Congress at Camp Roosevelt Ocala April 30 to May 2.
Dr Ladd M Spivey of Florida Southern College will deliver the dedicatory message April 22 at the Stone Gates entrance to Montverde School. The ceremony runs 4 to 5 PM with multiple local figures presenting the gates and attending a track meet and Alumni banquet later in the day.
The Lake County Press Association met in Tavares for a seven o'clock supper and business meeting led by president S. C. Peacock. All papers except the Eustis Lake Region were represented. Reports from the Florida Press Association meeting were given by Larry Lynch, John Lochner, and Peacock. A committee was formed to study legal advertising records and required financial statements.
Joe E. Brown stars in a fast paced Laugh filled film at the Princess Theatre Mount Dora Sunday and Monday. The plot follows a failed pugilist turned astrology student who becomes a Midway soothsayer and leads a wild, humor filled career with a climactic roar of laughter. Directed by Harry Beaumont the cast includes Marian Marsh Fred Keating Minor Watson and Edgar Kennedy.
The final race of the Mount Dora Winter Regatta 1937 for sailing and power yachts occurred on Saturday April 10 at 3 PM. Five power yachts contested the handicap event with staggered starts to finish together across two laps of a three mile course. Poise a new 17 footer by Wise Boat Works led early and briefly, but Spray, winner of all March races, closely chased finishing nearly tied as the wind held choppy seas.
Sprague defeated Eckis 19 to 17 in a 21 end final, earning a lamp while Eckis received a card table. The season showcased rising membership near 100 with two months of bowling left and a social match against Orlando club, Mount Dora prevailing 37 to 34.
Lake County sends 32 students to Stetson University with seven from Mount Dora. Names include Margaret Champ Clovis Brantley Bennett Hall Alfred Rehbaum Jean Smith Mary Elizabeth Simpson Martha Fenn and others from Tavares Leesburg Montverde Eustis Umatilla and Altoona. They engage in student leadership roles and community projects.
Capt. George A. Blair of Nashville who served in World War I with the 116th Infantry has bought the Montverde property including the home grove and is moving his family to Lake County. He was connected with Maj. John M. Robeson who runs a fishing camp in the area. Mr and Mrs Osgood purchased the large McEwan grove and home on Lake Apopka at Montverde and have moved in.
