Tax fairness in Indiana and Illinois draws scrutiny
A Washington based think tank study finds low earners in Indiana and Illinois pay higher shares of state and local taxes than most peers. Illinois ranks eighth and Indiana 12th in inequity, with the lowest 20 percent paying 14.4 percent in Illinois and 12.8 percent in Indiana. Experts cite regressive property and sales taxes alongside flat income rates. Local rates push Chicago area totals above 10 percent. Vigo County and 28 other locales impose food and beverage taxes.
