Public hearing on Gibson County coal permit in Mount Carmel
Residents questioned the Gibson County Coal Company proposal to mine across the Wabash River in Illinois. Engineer Blake Cutrell described room and pillar mining at under 500 feet, with 40 percent of coal recovered and moved to a processing site by conveyor. Illinois taxes and leasing rights were discussed, as was water safety and a five year permit with possible renewal. Public comment remains open through June 3 before IDNR decision on Gibson Mine Application No. 444.
