A large oak toppled onto the residence at 914 Plum St and damaged 912 Plum St, blocking utility lines and causing a gas leak. Police Chief John Lockhart said no injuries were reported as Mount Carmel Public Utility workers cut power, shut gas, and removed the meter. Wabash General Ambulance responded with no injuries.
Michael Smith of Guerra & Mauro toured Mount Carmel to recruit corn farmers for a mass tort against Syngenta over MIR162 claims in 2011 2012. The suit targets price drops after China rejected shipments and now seeks 30 trials in Minnesota federal court in 2017 with 50 000 cases already filed nationwide. Beall Woods hosted a Youth Fishing Derby on June 11 with 49 participants aged 6 to 16 and 94 in attendance. Anglers submitted 56 fish across bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and crappie. Winners include Eric Gonzales 3.75 lb most weight in ages 6–9. Seth Turpen 2.0 lb biggest bass. Alec Horton smallest fish 0.01 lb. In ages 10–12 Luke Perkins 4 lb most weight and biggest fish, Ethan Odom 0.05 lb smallest fish. in ages 13–16 Brandon Lane 6.5 lb most weight and Andrew Parrish 3.05 lb biggest bass. Brennan Lathrop 0.05 lb smallest bluegill.
Wabash County Sheriffs Department will receive a K-9 unit funded by a Sheriff's Association grant of 68,648.24 dollars. Sheriff Derek Morgan and Deputy James Sullivan led the effort, the dog arrives from Vohne Lidhe Kennels in Denver and will train eight weeks at Macon County K-9 Training Academy. The program will assist drug arrests tracking a missing person and other calls. A 2016 Chevy Tahoe will transport the deputy and the K-9.
Mount Carmel police stopped a 2004 Ford on W. 5th Street identifying William E. Birkla, 49, as the driver. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI after field tests and held at Wabash County Jail on DUI, disobeying a stop sign and expired registration. Dustin L. Kieffer, 29, admitted stealing a wallet at Brewsky Bar, jailed for theft under 500 with recovered funds returned to the victim.
