Noose Auctioned in Evansville Ties to Birger Gang History
On June 27 at high noon an Evansville auction sold a hangman’s noose for over 14000 dollars. Reportedly used to execute Charlie Birger in 1928, the item was bought by Randy Henson of Fairfield in memory of his father Fred Henson who wrote The Death of Carl Shelton. Shelton led the Shelton Gang in a violent rival to the Birger Gang. The two groups once united to drive the Ku Klux Klan from Herrin in the early 1920s.
