Ethanol production minimally affects cropland use study finds
University of Illinois researchers conclude that from 2007 to 2014 rising corn ethanol output did not meaningfully expand cropland. Despite doubling ethanol capacity and higher prices, total cropland changed little, with some land reverting to noncrop uses by 2014.

SPAEML offers multi-marker GWAS boost for complex traits
In Urbana researchers outline SPAEML, a new statistical GWAS approach that tests multiple DNA markers and their pairwise interactions to better capture complex trait genetics. Using simulations for Alzheimer's like human data and corn, SPAEML identifies simulated markers and distinguishes additive from interacting loci, proving concept feasibility and offering freely available software.
