Quantum error research drives NSF grant to Byrd at SIU
South ern Illinois University Carbondale physics professor Mark Byrd received a $180,000 National Science Foundation grant to study quantum computer noise and error correction. He argues that realistic systems are not isolated and may be entangled with their environment, affecting how errors evolve and how they can be corrected. The work aims to advance practical quantum computing beyond current noisy five Q-bit devices.

Quantum control could unlock floodgates of new tech
Byrd leads research on controlling quantum systems to reduce noise and enable advances beyond computing, including medicine, energy storage, and atomic power. Collaborations span Australia, Jordan, Spain, plus SIU students, focusing on models, theory, and computer simulations to reveal subatomic behavior.
