Allendale boil water advisory remains in effect
Allendale officials told trustees the boil water advisory continues until five samples sent to the Illinois EPA are retested after a water main break. One sample was questionable, so retesting is required. the advisory could lift over the weekend if results come back clear. Separately, Sadwinder Singh sought permission to install an electronic gaming machine at CJ's Fast Stop, but the board declined and signaled possible future ordinances banning gaming machines.

No sentencing delay in Southern Illinois student's death
In Murphysboro a judge refused to postpone the August 15 sentencing of Gaege Bethune for the 2014 death of Pravin Varaghese at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Prosecutors say Bethune, intoxicated, fought over cocaine and caused head injuries leading to hypothermia death. the defense contends Bethune's punches did not cause fatal injuries.

Kansas man indicted for shooting southern Illinois officer
A Jackson County grand jury indicted 24 year old Alex B. Karcher of Salina Kansas on aggravated battery and aggravated discharge of a firearm for firing several shots at Carbondale Officer Trey Harris during a January 2016 pursuit. Harris was wounded in the eye and lost vision. The shooting occurred after a dispute over 15 pounds of marijuana. Karcher was arrested on drug charges soon after.
