Prairie cordgrass may tolerate salty marginal soils for biofuel

University of Illinois researchers found prairie cordgrass accessions germinate well and produce comparable dry biomass to switchgrass under high salinity and sodicity. In greenhouse trials six cordgrass accessions and one switchgrass cultivar showed robust germination, with cordgrass outperforming early findings in salt tolerance. Field hints suggest cordgrass thrives in saline Illinois and South Dakota sites, offering yields up to 8 or 9 tons per acre, though broader agronomic adoption awaits further work.
