The Surry County Future Homemakers of America held a workshop Tuesday at Mount Airy High School. Officers from each club met with a counselor to review duties including president and secretary roles. Joyce Smith of Beulah presided at dinner with Mrs. Guy Blackburn guiding songs. Special guests were Mr and Mrs Tharrington and Mr and Mrs Finch, city and county school superintendents.

Woodrow Holder Passes Tuesday
Woodrow Holder 36 died suddenly at his Shelton town home at 11 a.m. Tuesday. A World War I Navy veteran born July 6, 1921 in Surry County, he was the son of Alex and Lula Byrd Holder. Survived by wife Virginia Kirkman, a son Jeffry Woodrow Holder, three daughters Mary F, Barbara Jean and Phyllis Ann, his mother Mrs. Holder of Mount Airy, and three brothers and three sisters. Services were held Thursday at Pene.

Kiwanis Club of Mount Airy hosts 400 children at Center Theatre on Saturday morning as National Kids Day events nationwide highlight youth. Free popcorn prizes and tickets donated by local school principals accompany a theater party in cooperation with Center Theatre management. Mayor W. Frank Carter Jr. proclaims September 28 as Kiwanis Kids Day.

Prison Terms Handed Down In Mount Airy Assault Cases
In Mount Airy court, Bobbitt 20 received 15 years for assault with intent to criminally assault a 10 year old girl on Sept 6, while Tate 20 drew a 16 month road sentence plus a six month larceny term for stealing radios. Mary Elizabeth Byrd, the victim, did not testify. Judge Sharp urged the case serve as a warning to protect other girls. Deputy Roy Smith testified in Tate's assault case involving Louella Stewart, 14, who described Tate forcing her to the bank after splashing water in a creek.

Federal agents and Surry County officers raided the Devotion community and destroyed one of the county’s largest liquor stills. Two men were present but escaped. one was watching as officers arrived. Couple Celebrate Golden Wedding
The children of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Perkins honored them with an open house Sunday afternoon for their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Ten year old Tamela Hiatt has entered Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem for burn surgery after the Flat Rock School fire on February 22. She suffered burns over about 30 percent of her body and is expected to stay in the hospital for about three weeks. Hermnes, Atty. Talmage Histt, his operation described as a beauty treatment.
