Mount Airy tobacco warehouse men merchants and farmers celebrate opening day of the 1965 Old Belt sales season. The market sold 476716 pounds for 292640.93 dollars, averaging 61.08 dollars per hundred. Sam Joyce supervised the sale.
Buyers purchased 467 890 pounds for 299 363 65 dollars over two days, averaging 63 98 per hundred, with Dixie Warehouse selling 146 412 pounds at 59 40 and United and others preparing for five more sales from Wednesday. Farmers face spoilage risk and warehouses brace for heavy leaf flow and redrying capacity.
The funeral for Sam Ramey 74 of Lowgap was held at Mountain View Baptist Church after he died early Tuesday at Waddell Hospital Galax. A native of Surry County he was a retired Lowgap merchant and long time Blue Ridge Evergreen Company associate. Survived by wife Ida Todd Ramey and three sons Earl Arnold and Wilson Ramey burial followed Masonic rites in the church cemetery.
First Lieutenant Luther C. Johnson of Elkin has been named commander of Company G in the Mount Airy Army Reserve. He previously led H H Company, 2nd Battalion, 518th Regiment (BCT) in Winston-Salem and holds a Wake Forest College degree. Johnson's military path includes service at Ft Gordon and Ft Lewis, and he serves as a YMCA Physical Director in High Point with his wife and three children at 304 Montlieu Avenue.
Area teachers and members of the North Carolina Education Association will attend the Northwestern District meeting Tuesday in Elkin. Local schools will observe Tuesday as a holiday to accommodate the teachers.

Mount Airy prepares Veterans Park for the 18th Surry County Fair with Page Combined Shows of Tampa offering thrill rides. The event runs daily through next Saturday with free gates on entry days and several community exhibits and prizes including bicycles, a used car, and a 1965 auto. Local groups stage exhibits and cattle show in the new exhibit hall while proceeds benefit Veterans Memorial Park.
Charles Murphy 31, from Bennettsville DC, becomes manager of the Mount Airy Jewel Box Store succeeding Bill Burgess who moves to Anderson SC as assistant supervisor. Murphy and his wife relocate to Brentwood Drive. he served seven years in the Army Reserve and is active in local business and civic circles.

A total of 373 animals were sold on the day.
Ray Bowman 18 of route 1 Ararat Virginia died at Baptist Hospital Winston Salem from injuries in a Sunday night crash on NC 89 near Toast at Beamer bridge. He rode as a passenger in a 1965 Comet driven by David Young route 1 Ararat. Young survived with satisfactory condition at Northern Surry Hospital. Bowman worked as a truck driver for W E Graham and Sons Winston Salem. He was born in Patrick County and survived by his parents and multiple siblings. Funeral held at 2 pm at Dee Run Baptist Church Croweh with burial in church cemetery.

Technical Sergeant Royal W. Riggan of the U S Air Force, a 13 year veteran and son of Mr and Mrs C F P Riggan of Mount Airy, departed a California air base yesterday for Viet Nam. His wife and daughter will remain at home.
