Mr Eli Combs aged about 55 died suddenly at his tobacco barn near the Quarry last Saturday around 11 30 am He had been in usual health and the funeral was held at his residence Sunday at 3 pm led by Rev C C Haymore with about five hundred neighbors in attendance The remains were buried at the former family burying ground He professed religion at a Baptist meeting and was to be baptized at 3 pm the hour of his funeral He leaves a large family and a good home and was regarded as a good citizen ready for the future
The C. C. Smoot and Sons Co. offer to buy dead chestnut wood as fuel and for acid extraction. The article notes chestnut wood contains the same acid found in oak bark and claims dead wood yields acid as cheaply as oak bark, opening a potential new timber industry.
