Lonesome Kate and the lonely wife’s fate in Pine Tree
The essay traces Silas Deal and his wife Lonesome Kate a striking beauty ostracized in Pine Tree by locals who judged her painted appearance and Western ways. She endures isolation while he works, and she dies of typhoid fever leaving no friends or neighbors to mourn her. The piece ends noting whispers about whether Kate and Silas were truly married.
