Mount Airy council amends taxicab codes and more
Mount Airy commissioners adopted amendments to the taxicab ordinance detailing rules for permit revocation and renewals. Robert Howard Snow’s taxi permit renewal was tabled to February 6, 1970 after police recommendation. The board also awarded a survey vehicle contract to Williams Chevrolet and approved several routine actions including a park lease renewal and a safety program review. The meeting recessed to 7:30 pm to revisit annexation plans for Granite City.

Wreck injures mount airy parents and babies on bypass
A Mount Airy man his wife and their two children were rushed to Northern Surry Hospital after a three vehicle collision on US 52 Bypass near Ray's Kingburger. Thomas Paul King suffered a broken wrist and facial lacerations while Brenda King endured leg fractures and lacerations. The 18 month old and 4 month old King were bruised and lacerated. Damages were about $2000. King was cited for following too closely.

Funeral services for Willie Alex Sloan 55 of 734 Penn Street Mount Airy will be held at 2 PM today at Moody Funeral Chapel. He died of natural causes unexpectedly Saturday at home. Born Guilford County to Alex and May Sloan he worked for First National Bank of Mount Airy. Surviving are wife Eva Galloway Sloan and three sons Jerry Michael Alex and Lynn E Sloan at home, plus two sisters Mary Louise Stevens of New York and Elizabeth Blocker of Philadelphia. Burial will be in Mountain View.

Dobson Man Killed In Tractor Wreck
A 50 year old Dobson man, Welborn, died after a farm tractor tipped while towing a truck loaded with logs. He was pronounced dead at Northern Surry Hospital. Funeral services set for Mountain Park Baptist Church with burial at Crestwood Memorial Park. he was survived by wife, daughter, grandchildren, brother, and five sisters.

44 arrests recorded at Mount Airy police headquarters from 6 pm Friday to 8 am yesterday. Of the total 24 were by policemen, 11 by state troopers and nine by deputies. Eighteen auto law violations include nine drunken driving cases and 12 liquor law infractions. The rest were miscellaneous offenses.

Thieves broke into Mount Airy Iron and Metal Works on North South Street Thursday night. A quantity of copper was among the missing items. The entry was discovered and reported to police Friday morning and officers are investigating.
