Tobacco farmers prepare for a meeting on a government control program aimed at stabilizing prices amid a large surplus. The withdrawal of British buyers forced state warehouse closures until aid could be arranged. A vote on the plan is expected the first week of October, with past support in Surry County at 76 percent.
The Highway Commission will call for bids on October 3 for the 2.17 mile project from the end of Pine Street in Mount Airy to beyond Laurel Rinoff on the Lewgap highway. The State Highway Commission will receive bids and push work this fall to straighten the remaining kink in the Mount Airy to Blue Ridge Parkway segment.
During the tobacco sales holiday farmers should observe stored leaf closely to maintain proper condition. If leaf in graded packs shows signs of becoming overly dry or moldy it should be reconditioned by drying and repacking, per Surry County Agent R R Smithwick.
A Washington conference with government officials and North Carolina legislators, including A D Folger, discussed a plan to aid tobacco growers of the flue cured sections through a government regulated control program. The department of agriculture considers a proposal to handle part of this crop via the Imperial Tobacco Company.
The annual Fulk reunion will be at Cedar Grove Church next Sunday September 24. Several quartets will provide entertainment for a large crowd expected to attend. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunch for the reunion dinner.
Paramount Newsreel cameras record first line combat from German lines. The 15 minute reel shows land sea and air warfare including Westerplatte bombardment sequences. It will screen next Monday and Tuesday at the Center Theatre in addition to the regular program.
Mrs Sallie McHone Donathan a Patrick County Virginia native died of pneumonia at her Produce Street home Sunday afternoon at age 16. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Monday. She is survived by two daughters Mrs Alvin Lunsford and

Judging of exhibits finished Tuesday and prize winners are listed on the newspaper's second page. Prize money distribution began Thursday with farm and home displays drawing notable attention.
Mount Airy man Roy Goins was tried in a Rockingham federal court and sentenced to two years in a U S penitentiary for intercepting and cashing a check from a Mount Airy post office letter. Police Chief R E Lawrence reported the verdict and sentence.
Leutenant Governor W P Horton of Pittsboro gains support from Chatham County as a leading Democratic hopeful for the 1940 nomination. Horton has not yet announced his candidacy.
C. C. Clinger head of the vocational and industrial arts department announces a new mechanical drawing course at Mount Airy High School. It will be offered free this year for about 15 students, taught one hour daily to enable students to draw their own plans for work in the industrial department.
Edith Allred of Mount Airy has entered a Dale Carnegie contest with a letter titled How I Cur ed My Inferiority Complex The letter was featured in Carnegie’s syndicated column and reprinted in hundreds of papers nationwide It describes a life change inspired by a remark about individuality and self acceptance.
A second Surry County school bus crash in two days sent an Eldora faculty member to Mitchell Clinic in Mount Airy with a facial cut. No children were injured. The auto driver Manuel Simpson, a county juror, escaped harm and continued duties in Dobson. The crash occurred seven miles from Dobson on the old Rockford highway in Little Mountain. Witnesses said the car went under the bus on a half moon curve. A prior Wednesday crash on the same highway near White Plains was more serious.
Martin Quesinberry 20 of Snake Creek was injured when his coupe left the Fancy Gap highway near Sunny Side after a rear tire blew out. He suffered a severed jugular vein but is now recovering at Martin Memorial Hospital. A young man from Lambsburg who had first aid training helped at the scene.

Surry County school bus driven by Worth Key 16 turned over on the Siloam White Plains road injuring eight children. Those hurt included Robbie Jean Puckett Billy Snow Jean Taylor and Billy Patton with several others receiving minor injuries and X rays taken for possible fractures. The bus had only 523 miles and no charges were filed as investigations continued.
Robert Wesley Younts father of Mrs. G L Byerly of Mount Airy died Tuesday evening at his High Point home aged about seventy. He was a retired merchant, Methodist, and Jr O U A M member. Survived by widow, one daughter, three sons Paul Roland James, and five grandchildren. Funeral was held at three o clock from the High Point home with many Belk’s employees and Mount Airy friends as attendees.
A correction states the Harvey Hiatt mentioned in last week’s News is not the Harvey Hiatt of Sheltontown who drives the bus, correcting a prior misidentification.
Virginia high court voids bond election in Galax, ruling Grayson County did not oversee the Grayson-side voting. The ruling bars the town from pursuing a municipal power plant despite prior PWA grant promise and local bonds approved. Citizens fear the project is dead.
Late Thursday officials circulated a petition urging Judge Nettles to call off the two week civil term set to begin next Monday due to the tobacco situation. County leaders say holding court would cause hardship, while the criminal term proceeds with Judge Nettles and Solicitor Scott overseeing a heavy docket and a nude rider case drawing attention.
