Secretary Wallace proposed relief loans potentially totaling 60 million dollars to alleviate distress in the flue cured tobacco belt as export sales lag. The plan received support from a conference of growers, warehousemen and business leaders at the same time as talks on crop control for 1940.
About 50 courthouse employees at Dobson joined a real old time chicken fry at Cumberland Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway last Pride afternoon. The group planned to meeting again noon this week if weather allowed.

Her birth home on Quarry road no longer stands and her family plans to reunite in Europe amidst delayed travel due to safety concerns. Friends and their physician Dr Meiges Piippin are noted in curious correspondence.
A term of criminal court will convene at Dobson next Monday for one week followed by two weeks of court for civil cases. Recorder's Court of Mount Airy and Judge Lewellyn sentenced Cassell and Sutphin to 12 months on the roads. they appeal. They and others face trial Wednesday for assault on a female with intent to commit rape.
About thirty four people gathered Tuesday at the Blue Ridge Hotel for a ladies night program arranged by Sam Hennis, chairman of the Lions entertainment committee.
W E Woodruff of Mount Airy spoke to more than 300 relatives and friends at a church picnic last Sunday. He urged gratitude for national blessings and discussed the current world situation and the war. An invitation to hold next year’s picnic near Boonville was accepted. the 1940 gathering is set for the second Sunday in September.
The Surry County Health Department announces a series of clinics this week. A midwives clinic is set for Monday at 9 a.m. in the city hall office and another at 2 p.m. in the Dobson courthouse. All county midwives must attend. Dr. R A Moore of Winston Salem will conduct a cripple children clinic Friday, September 22, from 8 to 12, with advance appointments advised.
A skating rink injury leaves a woman with a broken arm in a sling for six to eight weeks per doctors. Report notes no other injuries since the fair’s rink opened this year while last year saw many skating injuries at the same venue.
City tax books opened as George E. Welch turned over the 1939 tax books to Tax Collector C Hill. Total taxes due October 1 total 90 769 12 from a valuation of 6 340 719 including 41 900. Taxes payable now at the city tax office.
Oscar D. Sides started a new two story woolen mill on South street in Mount Airy. Completion is planned by January 1 1940 with day labor and no formal contract. The plant aims to produce woolen blankets and yarn under Sides sole ownership. Mrs. John L. Ashby fractured in a fall and remains hospitalized.
Kellock Hale Jr was named substitute chairman of the Surry county Red Cross chapter and Mrs Watt Shuford was named life saving committee chair at the executive meeting. The session also planned the annual Red Cross roll call set for November 11 with Mrs Sprinkle attending from High Point.
Among the divorces granted in the recent session of court at Wentworth, the proceedings reflect the lawful dissolution of marriage. Details on petitioners and dates were recorded in the court docket.
Dr. J. C. Hadley of Catawba College Salisbury will be at Mount Airy high school next Monday at 4 P M to offer teacher courses for certificate renewal and college credits. Last year classes were held there for teachers seeking credits but no arrangements were made for continuation this year. A school spokesman said Hadley's courses will likely be handled in the same order.
The Greater Mount Airy American Legion Fair opens Monday at 5 P M at River side Park with a record showing. Secretary William L Sydnor says crowds will eclipse any prior Surry county fair with more stalls and higher quality exhibits from farms homes and businesses. Premiums total about 1000 dollars and grandstand acts run at 3 and 8 daily. The fair introduces the Human Bullet and Watercade diving act plus a large wildlife exhibit directed by J Mac Reeves featuring Canadian grey goose and wild ducks.
Tickets were sent to all parts of the county and will admit students to the fair grounds on Tuesday during fair week. The day is designated as school day and officials announced prizes will be awarded to students.
By 1552 tons of ground agricultural limestone have been ordered for shipment to Surry County under the 1939 Soil Conservation Program. Each ton counts toward the soil building goal for 1938, with a $2.00 Grant of Aid deduction per ton to cover lime and hauling costs. farmers in some areas pay additional haul charges. Farmers urged to apply late-building practices such as ground limestone and triple superphosphate.
