Longtime Surry County Sheriff C H Haynes Dies at 86
Caleb H Haynes longtime Surry County Sheriff and Mount Airy resident died at Martin Memorial Hospital at 10 30 am Friday after a long illness. He served in public office from register of deeds to clerk of court and sheriff earning the nickname Sheriff. Surviving are his widow and ten children including Major General Caleb Vance Haynes of the Army Air Forces and several daughters living in Mount Airy East Orange N J Winnsboro SC Crescent City Pt NC and Washington. The funeral at First Baptist Church featured hymns and a short memorial service followed by interment at Oakdale Cemetery.

State Project Adopted By Local Club
Junior Woman's Club of Mount Airy with 49 members under Mrs Ed Lewis joined the State Federation of Women's Clubs to sponsor a major project. Hundreds of North Carolina young women will become honorary parents September 12 as the clubs promote the Children Home Society started in Greensboro in 1903. The drive runs September 5 to 25 to aid the Children’s Home Society, funded by private gifts, which has struggled to raise substantial funds.

Thomas William Parker known as Willie Parker, 43, Oakdale contractor of Mount Airy, died at 7 a m Tuesday from a heart attack while at a local restaurant. Born December 14, 1906 in Surry County, he was a Salem Methodist Church member. Funeral at 3 p m today at Salem Church. Burial in church cemetery. Funeral services for James H. Davis Jr. 28 of Mount Airy were conducted at Flat Rock Presbyterian Church with Dr. D. 8. McCarthy officiating. Davis drowned in the Sacramento River after escaping a Sacramento Government hospital while under mental treatment. He had served four years in Germany and was born May 19, 1921, in Mount Airy. Survivors include his mother Therisia Goodrum Davis, a son James H. Davis Jr., two sisters Vivian and Norma Jean Davis, two brothers Lew in Alaska and Bobbie in High Point, and grandmother Ida Lowry Davis of Mount Airy. Burial followed at Oakdale Cemetery.
