Mount Airy police urge strict compliance with stop signs and lights and warn against loud mufflers. Police Chief David Beal notes drivers mistakenly using standard mufflers and stresses the fire signal light at Rockford Street station requires motorists to stop well away to let fire engines exit.
Reginald T Joyner, son of Mr and Mrs PD. T. Joyner of Mount Airy, is sworn in as a member of the bar in Dobson. Presented by Judge Charles H. Randieman, oath by Walter Johnston Jr. Joyner, a Wake Forest Law School graduate, works for Pilot Knife Insurance in Greensboro. He is married to Patricia Brown of Pittsboro. they have a son and live in Winston-Salem.
The YDC will meet Monday evening at 7 30 p m in the Dobson courthouse. George Marion Jr serves as president and calls for member attendance.
Sam Joyce of Mount Airy Tobacco Market reports strong demand as Winston Salem opens with tobacco selling high. Tuesday Forsyth averages about 73.27 per hundred, with many lots up 2 to 3 dollars from last year. He predicts a good Piedmont crop and urges YDC members in Surry County to attend. sales begin Sept 16 with three warehouses receiving and space booked through the season.
Surry County Democrats schedule a giant political rally at 6 pm on Thursday atop Pilot Knob Mountain in Pilot Mountain State Park. Lt. Gov. Pat Taylor will speak. he has prior campaign ties in the area. Frank Comer leads invitations to nearby counties. organizers expect a large turnout with free food and entertainment.
Members of the Mount Airy High School Band will hold a car wash Saturday at Grants at Mayberry Mall beginning at 8:30 am. Band students are selling advance tickets for the car wash which includes cleaning inside and out.
Three GOP county commissioners met in Dobson and approved paying Archer Royal Davis for architectural services while favoring Hickory firm Architecture III for enlarging the courthouse. They plan a countywide taxi ordinance modeled on Mount Airy rules and endorsed condemnation plans in the Stewarts Creek watershed project. The meeting also appointed new DSM and zoning board members and set a Sept 16 adjourn date.
Recently discharged from the armed forces, Dr. Bernard L. Coniglio Jr. has joined Northern Hospital of Surry County as an Internal Medicine specialist. The Chicago native, son of Dr. and Mrs. Bernard L. Coniglio Sr., served as a U.S. Army Major with a Vietnam assignment and now resides in Ararat Virginia with wife Pat Ayers and three children.
Mount Airy leaders heard Library Foundation chairman Hale Yakley outline a 37 500 square foot property fronting Cherry Street adjoining Reeves YMCA and the goal to secure a site and raise funds for a new library turned over to the town. The board discussed federal aid, taxi ordinance revisions, annexation maps, and a $1 250 000 bond referendum to finance the town’s planned annexation.
Proceeds from a local car wash will be used by the band to cover transportation expenses for a weekend trip to Bristol Tennessee to compete in a marching festival. Parents and supporters praised the effort and encouraged more donations.
North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem accepts 229 new fall students, about 100 more than last year, with 252 returning for a total enrollment of 481. Among new enrollees are Norma Lucile Gardner Cynthia Marie Penn and Regine Cale Reynolds from Mount Airy all studying dance.
Market summary shows 374 animals sold on Wednesday with top hogs at 2475 and 23.50 for heavy tops. Calves to 38, cows to 2250, steers 1875, and cows by head ranging 105 to 139.
The VFEFW group will meet Monday at 7 30 p m at Veterans Park for a regular meeting Commander Lewis Bonds urges all members to attend. The VFW Claude FE squadron is noted.
