Red Cross bloodmobile in Mount Airy collected 208 pints toward a 300 pint goal over two days. Donor turnout included 173 accepted on Thursday and 156 on Friday with several first time donors. Volunteers logged 231 hours. donations were supported by Quality Mill employees and local clubs, with pin awards for multiple gallon donors and community groups assisting.

Woman Charged Over Riverside Drive Shooting
Bessie Lee Goldie Chappell, 57 of route 1 Canada, arrested Sunday afternoon and charged with assault with a deadly weapon in the August 22 shooting of Glen Alfred Tate on Riverside Drive. Tate was also stabbed in the incident. police say Chappell fired a 32 caliber pistol into his legs. She posted $1 bond and was released pending a hearing.

Mount Airy police headquarters logged 29 new arrests over the weekend. Seventeen were by officers, nine by state troopers, and three by deputies. Auto law violations topped the list with fifteen cases, including eight drunken driving offenses. Liquor law violations numbered eight, while miscellaneous violations accounted for the remainder.

Fast Driving Causes Wreck Of Two Autos
Delmo Eugene Lynch of Dallas faces charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and reckless driving after a Saturday wreck at Durham and Rockford streets. He skidded 183 feet, hit a rock wall, and his car was struck by Arnold Lee White of Dobson in a second collision. Minor damages reported. Lynch released on $500 bond awaiting September 22 hearing.

Elkin Area Man Shot and Neighbor Charged in Slaying
Billy Drew White 33 of Elkin is jailed without bond on a murder charge for the early Sunday shooting of 43 year old Robert Junior Royal in Elkin. Royal died after a high powered rifle wound in the front yard. an 8mm rifle was seized. Royal’s 13 year old son helped move the body before deputies arrived. Royal leaves a wife, two daughters, a son, and multiple relatives. Funeral is set for Welcome Valley Baptist Church at 2 p.m. today.
