Mount Airy voters authorized the town to issue 450000 in bonds for street and improvement projects. Ballots approved 265000 street bonds 140000 water works bonds 25000 sanitary sewer bonds and city hall improvements with large yes margins. Officials plan paving open streets extend water sewer systems and renovate city hall as needed.
Minnie Doss aged 53 of Mount Airy Route 4 died Saturday after noon. Funeral services were conducted Monday at Copeland Baptist Church by Revs. Delmar Hodge L W Burrus and Woodrow Jones. She is survived by her father Houston Doss Mount Airy Route 4 two sisters Mrs Silas Smith and Mrs Henry Moser Mount Airy Route 4 and a brother Oscar Doss of Dobson. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Franklin High School girls and boys basketball teams were celebrated Tuesday night by coaches J. C. Hiatt and J. C. Newsome. A Thanksgiving fete followed with decorations in school colors and autumn motifs. Guests included Principal H. Broome, Mrs. Broome, Franklin cheerleaders, sponsor, and Stuart High School guests from Stuart, Virginia.
Eddy Arnold, the WSM Grand Ole Opry star, appears Monday night December 2 1946 at the Rockford Street School Auditorium with shows at 7 30 and 9 00 p m Doors open 6 30 Sponsored by The Exchange Club. He will sing hits including I Walk Alone I Talk To Myself About You and Chained to a Memory with Lillie Belle and the Tennessee Plowboys Lonzo and Oscar.
Hasten Clyde Allred, 58, a World War I veteran, died Saturday evening at the local hospital after years of ill health. He was the son of the late J. W. Allred and Sarah Beamer Allred and survived by his sister Miss Jettie Allred. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday from the family home with Rev. R. K. Redwine of the First Baptist Church officiating, burial in Oakdale Cemetery.
A son born Tuesday morning to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Peterson at Parkview Hospital Rocky Mount. Mrs. Peterson previously Miss June Simmons. Also born Tuesday November 26 a son Worth Durham Banner to Mr. and Mrs. J Worth Banner of Chapel Hill at Rex Hospital Raleigh. A daughter Marsha Louise born November 19 to Mr. and Mrs. Minor P Taylor Wakefield Mass. She weighs five pounds fourteen ounces. mother Mrs. Taylor is former Miss Mabel Shelton.
The Central Methodist Church circles plan Monday meetings at 3 o clock in church circle rooms with a general session in the Sparger room for the program and officer installation. Circle 1 will hold a December 16 Christmas party at Mrs. Oscar Merritt's home. The Wesleyan Service Guild meets Monday night at Blue Ridge Hotel with Mrs. Jesse Hogan and others urged to attend the Vance Price Guild reorganization effort.
Miss Mary Franklin Graves spent several days of last week with her brother Mr. Porter Graves and his family in Atlanta Georgia.
Thanksgiving services led by Rev. Eugene Olive at Second Baptist Church. A Mount Airy delegation met with Sparta Highway Commissioner R. L. Doughton about Surry County road plans, with J. B. Sparger and W. F. Carter among speakers. The last railroad bonds to Mount Airy were paid this week, with a $25 000 county subscription helping the project. Babe Ruth to lay first brick at Knights of Columbus building in New York. Sheriff A L Ashburn reviews county tax books.
Hon. Charles M. Johnson, North Carolina Treasurer, will address Mount Airy and Surry County teachers on December 12 at 2 30 p m in the Rockford Street auditorium. He advocates higher school funding and teacher salaries. The public may attend to hear discussions on the state's finances.

Sheriff Sam Patterson sold a 1940 Ford coach for 1400 cash under court order on Moore Avenue Monday morning. Ed Steele of Mount Airy bought the seized vehicle, which was taken in June with liquor aboard and never linked to an owner. Proceeds go to the county school fund.
Arrangements bring two nationally known atomic scientists to Mount Airy Tuesday night at the Rockford Street school auditorium. Dr Everett Minett of Oak Ridge Tennessee and Dr Vernon Nash of New York City will discuss atomic energy and the bomb. An open forum will follow on atomic world issues as part of nine NC meetings to inform the public.
John Henry Johnson died Friday morning at his home in Ararat Route 1. Survived by widow Amanda Watson Johnson and many children, brothers, and sisters. Funeral held at Little Mountain Baptist Church with burial in Johnson graveyard.
Jesse Smith, a University of North Carolina student in Chapel Hill, is spending Thanksgiving with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Smith at White Plains.
A Kiwanis program Friday night will feature John E. Cruise of Clarksburg West Virginia as the evening speaker. Cruise serves as secretary of the West Virginia district of Kiwanis and has held the post for 15 years. Special music will be provided by Mrs. Howard Mills. The Ladies Night Christmas party is announced for December 13.
Wade McCrary of Mount Airy and Pred Nichols of Winston-Salem, both escapees, are jailed in Surry County on charges of stealing a Blue Ridge Taxi. George L. Lowry testified he picked up the convicts. McCrary slashed him with a knife, and the cab later turned up in Lancaster, South Carolina with Nichols aboard. McCrary faced an armed robbery hearing before Judge Harry Llewellyn and is held without bond.
James L Midkiff aged 65 died Tuesday at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem after kidney and heart troubles. The funeral was held Thursday at 2 p.m. from Flat Rock Baptist Church with burial at Oakdale Cemetery. Survived by widow Martha Jones Midkiff, three sons Jerry Ben and Frank, three daughters Mrs Willie Maynard Mrs Charles Kirkman and Constance, 13 grandchildren and one sister Mrs Frank Short.
Mrs. Norman Brown and her son Van return to Mount Holly New Jersey after visiting her parents Mr and Mrs W I Monday. Mr Brown joined them for a week during the stay.
The Mount Airy tobacco market awarded three prizes last Friday afternoon to farmers who sold on the market. A new Chevrolet car and a McCormick-Deering mowing machine will be given at the market’s close. Winners were Aubry Johnson, route 1 Frigidaire. Garlan Newman, route 3 Nissen Wagon.
Paul M Nelson aged 38 native of Mount Airy died Sunday in New York after a period of poor health. Son of D E and Jettie Forkner Nelson, former residents here, his family moved to Virginia about fifteen years ago and lived in Roanoke. The remains were brought to 606 Grandin Road Roanoke for funeral at 10:30 a m Wednesday led by Rev W P Watkins and Dr Zeb Robertson, with interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Survived by his parents and two sisters Mrs Lucy Jabbour of Washington DC and Mrs Hallie Wilson of Roanoke.
The remains of Celia S. Allen 65 widow of T W Allen died in Hilltop Sanatorium Pittsylvania County Va Saturday. Her funeral was held at 2 PM at Gunnell family burying grounds Carroll County Va conducted by Elder George Noonkester. Survived by four sons four daughters and three sisters.
In Mount Airy on November 26, 1946 a special bond election approved three bond ordinances and a fourth, with votes tallied: 314 for Street Improvement Bonds of 265000, 27 against. 313 for Water Bonds and 23 against. 298 for Municipal Building Bonds and 39 against. The measures authorize street work, water system expansion, sewer upgrades, and town hall remodeling with taxes to fund the bonds. The resolution was signed by Mayor W F Carter Jr and commissioners J P Frank W E Merritt Jr W A Poore L W Ashby.
