Mount Airy and nearby towns reel as news of President Kennedy’s shooting and death spreads. Citizens flock to radios and TVs, mills halt, and streets empty while leaders and residents express shock, grief, and resolve to support President Johnson. The NEWS compiles reactions from local figures across Pilot Mountain and Mount Airy.
President John F Kennedy was shot in Dallas as his motorcade passed by. Governor Connally was wounded in the same attack. Oswald was charged with the murder, and Jack Ruby killed Oswald in custody. The nation observed a world reaction to the tragedy and Kennedy was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
Warren Higgins Nowlin 6 died unexpectedly in his Mount Airy home. Coroner C L Thomas listed probable natural causes after colleagues reported he failed to report for work. Nowlin had worked for Advance Store locally for a year and previously for three years in other stores. He was married to Betty Lou Hull and left a son Jeffery. Surviving relatives include his mother and several brothers and sisters. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Airy with burial at Oakdale Cemetery.
Workmen's Federal Savings and Loan Association moved from downtown Mount Airy to a granite headquarters on North Main Street at Rawley Avenue. The new facility opens at 9 AM with eight teller cages, five offices, a bright airy lobby, an upper floor, an elevator, and a large parking lot. The firm serves over 15,000 customers with assets exceeding 22 million dollars and employs about MM staff across branches including Pilot Mountain.
Mount Airy residents reported a man matching Lee Harvey Oswald’s description asked Red Cross worker Mrs. Mills for money on November 18 claiming travel needs to Princeton West Virginia. She gave $2 and contacted Wytheville officials while noting the Dallas area accent and statements about a Russian wife and two children. Police and state agencies followed up on the tip.
