Elmer Clinton Davis of route 2 Pilot Mountain was injured on Monday evening while operating a press in the Proctor Silex production department. His left arm was amputated at Northern Surry Hospital and he is listed in good condition after surgery.
A workman, Billy Glenn Berry 31 of Deep Gap, was killed Tuesday when a ditch bank collapsed during sewer line construction in Mount Airy near Boone. He had started two weeks earlier with Carson Exeers Construction Company of Bilewing Rock and was at the bottom of a 15 foot ditch on Jackson Street when the collapse occurred. Albert Tester of Boone was assisting at the scene.
At a regular meeting the Mount Airy board scheduled a December 14 public hearing at 7 p.m. in City Hall for Jack Greenwood's rezoning request on a Lebanon Street tract fronting Witt Street next to Jones Funeral Home from General Business to General Residential. The Planning Board recommended approval.
Landmark razed as Planters Bank clears site for a new granite faced bank building in Granite City. D H Griffin Company bulldozed the former H H Llewellyn home on North Main Street at Independence Route to make way for construction and a parking lot during the upcoming project.
Mount Airy High School band declines a spot in the Second International Band Festival in Vienna due to financial burden. The trip would cost about 640 dollars per person, totaling nearly 58 000 dollars for 80 participants, prompting the decision to preserve funds for students and local citizens.
Mount Airy police and the Surry sheriff’s department recovered a stolen battery charger after two youths tried to sell it at Brown’s Garage on Dixie Street. Ronald Lee Dixon, 16, and a 15 year old juvenile were charged with breaking and entering larceny and receiving. the juvenile was released to his father until a juvenile court hearing. Cosby Golding of Lowgap owned the charger and had bought it from Motor Sonemly Co. in Mount Airy. The youths admitted possession after questioning.
Patrolman Terry Miller of Dobson and Mount Airy resigns after four years in the Mount Airy police department effective at month end. He plans to study wildlife biology at Appalachian State University. The chief invites applications to fill the vacancy from candidates meeting age height and health criteria.
Surry County prepares two Christmas parades on Saturday with Mount Airy at 10 am and Dobson at 4 pm. Mount Airy will feature 63 units marching down Main Street with clowns, beauty queens and seven marching bands. Dobson parade starts at Surry Central School parking lot with floats, queens and town officials. Traffic will be directed by Mount Airy police and volunteers as lights are turned on after the events. Old Santa Claus will appear with reindeer in each parade marking the start of the Christmas shopping season.
An early morning fire heavily damaged a West Lebanon service station owned by Oscar Smith and John Sawyers. Police alerted Mount Airy firefighters who battled the blaze for nearly two hours, with an adjoining barber shop suffering smoke damage. The storage room fire was undetermined in cause and no injuries were reported.
Mount Airy Lions Club president Carroll Gardner reports proceeds from a bulb sale will aid visually handicapped residents. Plans are under way to provide a special Christmas outreach for several handicapped individuals.
The Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce will sponsor Frank Jones son of Mrs Mildred Jones of 1027 Willow Street to the Banquet of the Geilden Pirate in Chicago Illinois next June 16 19. Jones is an 8 North Carolina Senator delegate to Boys Nation in Washington DC and holds a citizen of achievement invitation. He will meet fifty captains of achievement and take part in symposiums and programs.
Old Saint Nick will parachute into Mayberry Mall’s parking lot at noon Saturday. The event invites the public to watch as the annual mall stunt unfolds and treats are provided for children.
