Missing Since September Body Found Monday
The body of Pate Hayes a 79 year old inmate of the Surry County Home was found in a field near Dobson on Monday by a nearby tenant farmer who reported the odor. Sheriff Patterson and Coroner Woltz ruled death as likely from natural causes. He is survived by sister Mrs. Dora Spicer of near Independence Virginia.

Private First Class Thomas R. Gunnell 24 of Mount Airy North Carolina earns praise after a solo action against Japanese snipers on Noemfoor Island July 3. He leapt from a treetop to engage targets with an MI rifle and says the Parachute Infantry Regiment showed valor on patrols. Gunnell returns from overseas duty and plans to resume action after furlough.

Technician Fifth Grade Pete A Thore 34031534 of the 121st Infantry is awarded the Bronze Star Medal by order of the President for heroism in France on August 8 1944. He moved forward to evacuate eleven casualties under heavy fire and continued to safety. He is the son of Mrs Charity Thore of this city and has two brothers serving abroad.

The War Department reports he was killed accidentally by German mines after entering service in late 1943 and five months overseas. Cpl Jones Escapes German Strafe In Italian Action
Cpl Wilford Jones of Mount Airy North Carolina escaped unharmed when a German MB 109 bombed and strafed his 105 mm howitzer battery with the 88th Blue Devil Division in the Fifth Army Italy near Castel Del Rio. The crew moved guns off the road but one prime mover was hit, killing the driver and wounding several crew.

Vernon Helps Move Hospital Supplies in ETO
Pfc Vernon, son of Mrs Blanche Vernon of Dobson North Carolina, serves in the medical supply office of the 1927th General Hospital which moved over 300 tons of medical items. The unit packs and checks stock for wounded soldiers and supports officers with needed supplies during overseas service. Vernon has been overseas more than a year and joined his unit as a clerk.
