William G. Sydnor Dies After Illness at Martinsville
William G. Sydnor died after a brief illness at Martin Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held at his home with Rev. A. Hale, Rev. W. J. Miller, and Rev. J. B. Picklen presiding. He had moved to Mount Airy in 1892 from Mecklenburg County, Virginia, built a career in real estate and insurance, led Renfro Hosiery Mills as president and served as chairman of its board. He influenced multiple civic and business ventures before passing from a heart attack.

Emma Fleming about 55 was seriously injured when struck by a delivery truck driven by Tommy Fulk of Mount Airy on Main Street. She was crossing in front of the First National Bank. The driver was not held by officers. She was taken to Martin Memorial Hospital in serious condition. Her home is in the Pipers Gap community on Mount Airy.

Dewitt Chapman seven year old Mountain Park school boy was killed Thursday afternoon when he fell under the rear wheel of a school bus. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Oscar Chapman near Thurmond. After alighting from the bus he ran beside it with other children. the driver Claude Harris was cleared of blame after inquiry.

Grover Hicks, 56, was killed instantly when a Bowman Grocery delivery truck struck him while he walked along a highway near Mount Airy last Saturday night. Hicks, a native of Surry County born in 1883, left a wife who died in 1928 and is survived by three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held at Moody Funeral Home on Franklin Street.

Young Mount Airy worker faces reckless driving appeal
Cecil Rose, about 22, of Mount Airy, appeared before Judge Lewellyn in the records court on charges of reckless driving and hit and run. He allegedly struck the car of Pred Llewellyn and others on the Dobson highway November 12 and fled the scene. The court ordered $800 in fines to be paid to victims and costs, with Rose appealing to superior court and released on a $500 bond for later Dobson hearing.
