Scattered grass fires kept several fire departments busy over the weekend amid very dry woodlands. Forest Service warns of crest fires and widespread statewide fire danger. All burning permits canceled. locals urged to be cautious until rains arrive. Mount Airy crews battled a 3:30 a.m. grass and woods fire off Old Springs Road on Buck Faw property, with trees and brush damaged. Additional car fires occurred at Harvey Thomas residence, 148 Webb Street, Pete Morrison residence, and Eddie Dorsett residence, due to an electrical fault and furnace smoke.

15-Year-Old Held In Shooting Death Of Father
A 15-year-old is held after his father Jesse James Goins 46 was shot once with a 410 gauge shotgun around 8 p.m. Sunday in Slate Mountain Community near Mount Airy North Carolina. Goins died at Northern Surry Hospital after being found at his home. The youth turned himself in at Mount Airy Police Department and faces a first degree murder petition in juvenile court. Investigators say family arguments preceded the shooting. Funeral arrangements for Jesse James Goins scheduled for Wednesday at Moody Funeral Chapel. Surviving relatives include his wife four daughters and four sons.

Mt Airy police detective D R Armstrong reported the recovery of eight saddles stolen from a horse barn on Alfred Mill Road November 7 valued at 2500 dollars. Kenneth Snow 16 of Dobson and a 14 year old accomplice were taken into custody Sunday night and information led to the saddles hidden in nearby woods.
