Well Known Local Merchant Dies
The funeral for John Henry Midkiff 75 of 235 Orchard St Mount Airy will be at Moody Funeral Chapel at 11 today. He died Saturday evening at Baptist Hospital Winston Salem after an emergency operation. He had been hospitalized since November. Born in Virginia he moved to Mount Airy in 1912 worked for a hardware store he later owned as John Midkiff Hardware Co. He was a long time Good year tire dealer, charter member of the Mount Airy Country Club and former Lions Club member. Surviving are four daughters twelve grandchildren eight great grandchildren two brothers five sisters and many relatives. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. memorials to Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Burial in Oakdale Cemetery.

Born in Patrick County Virginia to William E and Minnie Boyd Gunnell she was a former Renfro Hosiery Mills employee. Surviving: her mother and four sisters. Burial in Willis Gap Baptist Church cemetery.

An automobile crash on NC 268 near Copeland Servicenter left two people injured and two cars damaged. James Cresswell, 39, of Winston-Salem hit Curtis Hutchens, 48, of Dobson, who was turning onto rural road 2209. Hutchens was charged with failing to yield the right of way. Lucille Hutchens, 44, suffered extensive injuries and was hospitalized.

Mrs. Mary Boyles Lynch 31 of route 1 Mount Airy died Saturday after a short illness. She was the wife of James William Lynch and was born in Surry County to Mr and Mrs W Boyles. Surviving are her husband her parents two brothers Greg Boyles of Sanford Fla and Jimmie Boyles of White Plains. Burial was in the McGee family cemetery at Holly Springs.

About $1,500 in cash and checks were taken Friday evening from Pilot Curb Market on US 52 in Pilot Mountain. Co owner Kermit Lewis left to help customers and returned to find a large billfold with cash and checks missing. Police say roughly 300 in tens and twenties 250 in fives and a few ones. rest were checks. Authorities seek customers who cashed checks there Friday November 15 to arrange voucher replacements. No arrests yet but leads are being pursued by Chief W J Fulton.

Lovelorn Youth Wounds Self After Rejected Proposal
Lanny Templeton, 19, of Columbus, Georgia, wounded himself in the lung with a .22 pistol after his Elkin girlfriend refused his marriage proposal. He hitchhiked to Elkin, proposed to Debbie Triplette, and was driven to Brooks Cross Roads before returning to the Triplette home and shooting himself at about 4:45 PM. He was in satisfactory condition in Elkin Hospital. Elkin police investigated with help from county authorities.

Murder Charge After Route 1 Shooting in Siloam
William Bruce Lawson, 32, of route 1 Pilot Mountain, is charged with first degree murder in the Saturday night death of Wesley Strauchter Cook, 55, of route 1 Siloam. He is held without bond in Surry County Jail after arrest at the scene. Lawyers planned for Lawson as the investigation continues.

Elder Dobson resident shoots alleged intruder through door
An 86 year old man from route 1 Dobson fired a 20 gauge shotgun through his door at Paul Folger Draughn 41 of Dobson injuring him twice in the right leg. Draughn was treated at Elkin hospital and later moved to Winston-Salem for further care. Deputy Bill Hall said Hodges admitted firing but no charges filed yet while investigations continue.

Army Staff Sergeant Edgar D Jones 29 son of Nannie R Jones route 1 Galax Va received the Bronze Star Medal near Frankfurt Germany for meritorious service in military operations in Vietnam from June 1967 to June 1968. He is a communications chief with the 3rd Armored Division in Frankfurt Set. Jones entered the Army in 1962 and trained at Fort Jackson. He served with the 18th Artillery in Vietnam. Driver Charged After Mount Airy Wreck at Pine and Gilmer
E. J. Phillips, 3, of Pilot Mountain, charged with speeding too fast for conditions after a Saturday morning crash in Mount Airy at Fast Pine Street and Gilmer Street. Charles Jackson Wampler, 27, of 308 Pender Street, Mount Airy, stopped to let a left turning car pass. Phillips rear ended Wampler’s vehicle with no injuries but property damage estimated.
