The Health Department reports progress in TB screening of schoolchildren and teachers. Of 127 teachers tested 17 showed positive reactions, indicating past exposure. Mount Airy and Surry County results vary with about eight percent in the east. X rays are being used to assess any active disease and to guide early prevention efforts.
Wilson Patterson of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill was taken to Watts Hospital in Durham early in the week for diagnosis and treatment under a specialist. His parents Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Patterson expect to visit him late this week to learn the physicians findings and whether an operation is needed.
Funeral services were held for Ellen Swift 48 wife of Lester Swift at Pilot View M P Church. She was found dead Tuesday morning at her home three miles southwest of Pilot Mountain from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Coroner jury ruled death by own action. Survived by husband two daughters and three other relatives.
The Surry County Health Department holds its regular cripple clinic Friday November 27 from nine to twelve in the Health Dept offices in City Hall. Dr. R A Moore of Winston Salem will supervise the clinic and patients should schedule appointments in advance.
Surry County reports show Mount Airy secured about 250 memberships with Dobson at 25 and Elkin Pilot Mountain totals awaited. The county seeks 600 members with funds spent locally on welfare health and emergency needs under the Red Cross program led by Wilson Barber and Roll Call head Mrs Wolfe.
Mrs. Alice H. Hege sues in Surry Superior Court to void a March 1933 deed of trust for $6,400 on Mount Airy lands and dental equipment. She says it was to Carrie E. Hege without consideration and signed under duress, clouding Dr. Hege's estate. Attorneys Polger and Polger represent the plaintiff. Carrie E. Hege, now Mrs. Boyles, was served in Winston-Salem cessation.
Mount Airy tobacconists report a new season high as tobacco sells up to 80 dollars per hundredweight. Week opens with brisk sales averaging 20.12 and buyers show strong demand for medium and good grades across three warehouses. Growers urged to sell at Mount Airy for fast, assured local sales and market advantages.
Judge A. D. Polger will leave Saturday for Washington North Carolina to open a term of court next Monday. His schedule will keep him in the Eastern counties of North Carolina until the Christmas holidays.
Two engineers from the malarial division of the State Department of Health visited Surry County and conferred with Dr. Ralph J. Sykes in Mount Airy. The most serious site is the Buck Shoals pond backwater two miles south of Mount Airy with other breeding areas in town. No plan was proposed yet, but Dr. Sykes cites two options: a WPA labor project for ditching and draining or transferring the work to the CCC in the county.
The Mount Airy Foundry Co. is a new Mount Airy enterprise with Will D. Merritt as proprietor. A foundry erected on the Pilot Laundry Machinery Co. lot on Pine Street near the depot is fully equipped for machine, stove and grate castings. The plant began casting this week drawing crowds to view the molten iron and pouring process under experienced supervisor Manuel Oriswnan.
Mrs. Jake Pack of Slate Mountain was bitten on the thumb by her house cat on November 9. The cat later showed fits and was killed. the head was sent to Raleigh for testing. State Laboratory of Hygiene confirmed rabies and Mrs. Pack began Pasteur treatment at the city health office.
Mr Noonkester of Hallow Va reports killing a seven months old hog weighing 303 pounds for The News annual Big Hog Contest. Farmers from Barry County and neighboring areas submit weights each year in an unofficial event with no prize, but local interest remains high as residents seek the county’s top hog raiser.
Judge W F Carter, veteran of the Surry County Bar, spent four weeks in the local hospital being treated for an ailment resembling influenza. He is improved and has returned home on South Main Street to recuperate.
Materials ordered for a 25 mile Duke Power line from White Plains to Lowgap. Nine carloads of creosote treated poles and 55 000 pounds of wire ordered. A camload of transformers also ordered. Poles 35 to 50 feet long. Main line uses No 2 strawed aluminium wire with 68 000 volt capacity, stepped to 110 volts for copper service lines.
Howard Barker nine year old son of Mr and Mrs Mallon Barker of this city was struck on Rockford street near Worth Saturday afternoon by a car driven by F A Park of White Plains. He suffered a fractured skull and leg and was hospitalized. Park posted a five hundred dollar appearance bond and his hearing was set for Monday November 23 at the local recorder s court.
D C Lewis purchased the remaining half of Blue Ridge Hotel property on Main Street from W J Byerly for forty thousand dollars. G C and J W Lovill retain their half interest. Bank of Mount Airy liquidation benefits noted. Final deed and money transfer completed Thursday night through Geo W Sparger Jr. Wyrick of the bank announced funds to be used for future stockholder dividend.
A sharp temperature drop lasted the week with a brief snow flurry Sunday afternoon. Virginia reporters note winds near blizzard strength in Carroll and Grayson counties, creating white mountain peaks. Official readings show lows from 23 to 31 degrees and highs from 47 to 61 across the period.
Mount Airy mourns as Joseph Hooker long time Atlantic and Yadkin railroad conductor dies of heart attack on the Greensboro run. He is survived by first wife Milan Saeed Sawien two sons and wife Tla Davis with Howard Hooker and others from King Winston Salem and Patrick County Virginia attending the funeral at Oakdale Cemetery.
