Scenic Highway Plan Moves Forward Amid Washington Talks
Washington officials and North Carolina Virginia delegates met to back a scenic highway linking Shenandoah National Park and the Great Smokies. A 16 million dollar allocation was approved to route the road along the Blue Ridge crest with surveys and easements to proceed. The plan envisions a 200 foot right of way and rapid start, with Harry Byrd likely heading the Scenic Highway Commission and Doughton Hancock promoting the crest route. The Kiwanis Club pushed Crest route advocacy through telegrams, and the project would connect feeder roads from North Carolina and link with Wards Gap Pipers Gap and Lowgap highway developments. Curtis Willison of The Hollow, Va., died Saturday at 25 from tuberculosis.

Doctor Britt and Mrs Reeves Injured in Car Crash
Dr T C Britt remains confined to bed with an injured leg after his car skidded off a slick Rockford street bridge road. Mrs L B Reeves, county health nurse, was cut across the face and suffered a serious eye injury and is hospitalized at Martin. Miss Bessie Mitchell and Dr R J Lovill cover office duties during their absence. recovery will take several days.

Ed Cox Held For Murder Of Harrison Ashburn
Ed Cox, a filling station operator, is in the city jail awaiting a preliminary hearing next Monday before Judge Llewellyn on a murder charge. Harrison Ashburn was shot at Coxs station last Saturday morning while seated in his car. Two bullets struck Ashburn, one Combs wounded, and two bullets went wild. Cox surrendered at police headquarters and has made no statement. Parley Combs was wounded in the back and is in a hospital in critical condition. John Abels escaped injury. Witnesses say there was little prior exchange of words. Cox fired five times with a .38 caliber pistol. Legal counsel J. H. Folger and H. O Woiltz represent Cox. Ashburn’s relatives plan to hire counsel for prosecution.

Homes Burned of Presbyterian Minister and Neighbor
Fire last Sunday morning destroyed the homes of Rev. R. L. Berry, pastor of Flat Rock Presbyterian Church, and Mr. W. S. Yates on Springs road. The Yates house, found burning in the roof, yielded quickly to no available means of fighting it, furniture saved, and the dwelling described as one of the best in the area. Berry’s two story frame home on the quarry road belonged to a stone cutter who no longer resides locally.

Hunters Bring Back Venison
Mount Airy citizens hunted in Eastern North Carolina last week and returned with a large fine buck. One hunter was unlucky and, per custom, had the tail of his shirt cut off. Prof. L. B. Pendergraph and others in the party fired at deer and missed. he was sentenced by the camp to pay the penalty. The party included W. S. Monday Dr. T. C. Britt Frank Sydnor and Matt Smith.

Community Chest plans for a threefold drive in Mount Airy to raise 2500 for Red Cross, 1700 for Community Charity, and 300 for the Public Library. Last year the town gave about 600 to the Red Cross. a house to house canvass will seek cash pledges with flexible payment options. The count shows Red Cross aided 2298 families, distributed garments and fabric valued at over 8172. The canvassers meeting is set for Monday at 2 PM at the Community Building with a long list of volunteers and organizers listed.

Prosecutors identified the defendants in Recorder's Court after witnesses testified the carnival party used trickery to steal their funds.
