Mount Airy prepares its annual Empty Stocking Fund drive with bag collection on 2 pm November 24 and distribution by firemen and Boy Scouts on November 21. Residents may request pickup by calling 786-4027 AB. Carter leads the fund with help from the Mount Airy Woman's Club.
The Mount Airy Kiwanis Club sponsors a two day Pancake Jam at North Surry High School. Tonight 5 pm to 8 pm and tomorrow 6 am to 9 am the cafeteria serves pancakes sausage syrup coffee jam and jelly. Proceeds support school projects.
Mount Airy High School faces Southern Alamance in a postseason playoff with tonight's game not covered by regular season season tickets. Ticket holders must purchase entry at the gate.
The Surry District of the Old Hickory Council dissolves and combines with Stokes County scouts to form the Dorwood District. Dr H W Bradley announced the ballot outcome to about 200 Scouters at Central Methodist Church. Oliver Hauser and Mickey McCall named Scoutmasters of the Year for leadership and troop development.
Cenfer Surry Cenfer Surry president of the Shoals Ruritan Club and Shoals School principal received praise for community work. McCall, Level Cross Church Scoutmaster of Troop 505, earned tallies for his troop. Scoutmaster Jimmy Davis of Troop 529 won Scouter of the Year for enthusiasm and leadership, with Davis also receiving the Fred C. Pruett Camping award for Troop 528.
Wilson of Troop 542 was runner up in the annual competition sponsored by Mount Airy Friends Church. John Sobotta Advancement trophy went to Troop 596, host church sponsor. Cubmaster Harry Vaughn accepted in the absence of Scoutmaster Richard Vaughn. Mrs Opal Wilson, awards banquet chair for five years, presented Troop 546 with best decorated table award. Bradley honored Mrs Wilson with a plaque for five years of service during awards banquets. Den Mother award noted.
A severe snow storm dumped 5 to 10 inches across the county with higher totals atop Fancy Gap and Mount Airy. Snowdrifts and high winds blocked highways, delaying traffic and closing schools while power outages affected residents for up to two days.
John Midkiff owner and general manager of Midkiff's Hardware Store on North Main Street in Mount Airy is a patient in a Winston Salem hospital after undergoing surgery Wednesday.
Lt. Gilmer Eldridge of Mount Airy Police Department earned a diploma for completing a correspondence jailor course sponsored by the U S Department of Justice Bureau of Prisons. He passed exams on prisoner care security receiving supervision feeding sanitation health services and duties. The framed diploma will be displayed at police headquarters.
Market sold 310 animals on Wednesday. Top hogs 18.10, heavy top 17.50, sows 13 to 17.50, top calves 37.30, heavy top 34.75, No 2 calves 34, heifers 15 to 22.50, cows 11 to 16.75, bulls 18 to 22.50. Cows by head 90 to 187. Night after hospital stay.
State Highway Commission calls for bids on a six mile segment of US 52 from Boone's Hill near Mount Airy to Pilot Mountain. Project adds a second lane, creates a four lane divided highway with interchanges and service roads. Bid opening in Raleigh on Tuesday November 26 at 1:16 am. contract possible by December if funds permit.
Mount Airy Pilot Mountain Development Corporation announced a fifty cent per share dividend for stockholders of record October 16 1968 payable January 1969. The group plans a new heavy industry for the Pilot Mountain park and has acquired an alternate site near Mount Airy for Cablevision Inc. equipment. A topographical map is being prepared for prospective clients and Thomas may purchase Pilot Mountain land.
Publisher James E. Johnson announced a major expansion for the Mount Airy News including a new 6000 square foot building on Renfro and Oak streets and a 16 page 4 unit Goss offset press from Chicago. The project aims to boost biweekly editions to color full production with 14000 copies per hour.
Hanes Corp of Winston-Salem negotiates to acquire Pine State Knitwear Company of Mount Airy pending favorable tax lines and earnings inventories conditions. Pine State, founded 1930, employs 285 in 90 000 square feet and markets under Arena label with 32 salesmen. If finalized personnel remain in place. Acquisition would expand Hanes line to include sweaters for men and boys.
Surry County schools will be in session Saturday from 8 30 AM to 2 PM to makeup a snow day. No Tuesday session was held due to snow. this is the first makeup day of the current season.
