Entries Grow For Mount Airy Xmas Parade In December
The 1963 Mount Airy Christmas Parade entries list expands with sponsors including the Merchants Association, Jaycees, and floats for Santa Claus Miss Mount Airy and Miss North Carolina. Deadline for new entries is November 23 with many businesses and groups already signed up. A large procession of bands clowns and other acts is planned.

The Pilot Mountain Jaycees announce the first Miss Pilot Mountain pageant as a preliminary to Miss North Carolina. The event is set for December 21 at 7:30 PM in East Surry High School gym, with a 2 PM Christmas parade the same day. Farmer Loses Chicken House in Night Fire
Sam Haymore a broiler grower in the Salem Fork community lost a chicken house to a blaze Monday night. He had pre heated the area for a Tuesday chick shipment when the fire started after dark. Fire crews from Dobson and Mountain Park found the building collapsed upon arrival.

Forgery Ring Is Broken Up Here
Mount Airy police report four people arrested in a check forgery ring case after six weeks of investigation. Mary Catherine Jennings 28 of Mount Airy Route 6 faced charges including forgery drunk and disorderly and violation of prohibition laws with a $2,000 bond posted. Charlie E. Dean 20 Lonnie Dean 31 of Dana Virginia and Bobby Joe Stanley 32 of Dobson were also arrested with Lonnie Dean posting $600 bond.

Peele Convicted In Death Case Gets Sentence
Joseph Bruce Peele, 37, convicted in Dobson Superior Court of fatally shooting Deputy James B. Trevathan near Mount Airy on June 2. He received 18 to 28 years in prison. Co-defendant Marion Lea O Neal, 33, was sentenced to 12 months in Raleigh Woman’s Prison with 12 months suspended contingent on returning to Kentucky and supporting her children. Deputy Howard Chandler testified about the events. a teen witness described Peele firing first, then both sides shooting. The car contained a half gallon of white whiskey.

Kenneth M. Brim Greensboro attorney and longtime Duke trustee officer was named vice chairman of the Duke University Board of Trustees. Driver Suffers Heart Attack on Main Street
Wade Hampton Spillman 68 of North Main Street died after suffering a heart attack while driving south on Main Street in a 1951 Ford. He collided with a parked 1967 Ford owned by Robert James Berrier causing minor front and left rear damage. He was the son of Thomas A. and Martha Lakey Spillman. survived by a brother and three sisters. Funeral held at Moody Funeral Home with burial in Skyline Memory Gardens.
