Elkin locals plan a Thursday parade featuring a new Market Street appearance in Blanket City to honor FE Gwyn McNeil Jonesville district highway commissioner for enabling swift street and highway improvements in the corner of Surry County.
Park attendance for the week shows 2268 visitors to Pilot Mountain State Park with 673 picnickers and 73 along hiking trails. The Elkin Christmas Parade marks Market Street opening after ribbon cutting with civic leaders, Miss Connie Dorn, Miss Deborah Lawrence and multiple high school bands. Five bands perform and Santa Claus appears, preceding Mount Airy and Dobson parades in late November.
In 1972 Dobson hosts a Republican rally as Surry County returns four victors Gay York Register of Deeds Clayborn Taylor and Gaston Brinkley Commissioners and Bill Hiatt in the North Carolina House. The crowd lauds Alberty and plans moves for cooperation with the incoming GOP team.
Sunday proved productive for Detective Fritz Booker of the Surry sheriff's department who located liquor in transit and uncovered evidence leading to the arrest of a youth charged with jewelry theft. An officer stopped a 1068 Chevrolet around 6 am in front of 615 May Street.
At a Dobson victory rally for Jim Holshouser, campaign manager Den Beason warned that many Democratic state employees may lose their jobs to make room for Republicans, with assurances that career workers are safe except top officials. The event also notes Holshouser's inauguration date and a separate car search incident in Sandy Level.
Pollster Walter Devries says his final general election poll showed Bowles below 30 percent, with Bowles obtaining about 48 percent and losing to Republican Jim Holfhouse. Undecided voters were around 15 percent in prior surveys. independent polls cited different figures.
Jim Holshouser the first Republican NC governor in 76 years will be sworn in January 5. The ceremony comes five days before the 1973 General Assembly session opens after talks with Governor Bob Scott in Raleigh.
Joe Watts of Elkin a Democrat and Surry board of elections chair said by phone he has not resigned and remains serving a two year term through 1974. The rumor spread after last Tuesday's county results and may be affected by the incoming governor’s choices. Watts noted the other board members are Oscar Smith of Pilot Mountain and Mrs Joe Patterson of Mount Airy.
The D comahs from Mount Airy Senior High will stage their first fall show at eight each night at the Fine Arts Center. Faculty adviser Don Nance says a large cast promises an enjoyable performance with tickets sold at the door.
Jerry Wayne Bowman 19 of route 2 Mount Airy drove a 1872 Ford truck owned by Bray's Recapping Service west along Lebanon Street. A 1188 Ford from a parking lot entered Lebanon Street at Alfred Mill Road. both vehicles collided. Damages were about 400 for the car and 450 for the truck. Charlies Elmer Busick 20 of route 2 Dobson, the car driver, was charged with no valid North Carolina operator's license.
Sam Inman Jr. of Mount Airy, now a Charlotte motel operator, will have open heart surgery today at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. His parents, Mr and Mrs Maurice Inman of Mountainview Road, Mount Airy, left yesterday to stay with him during recovery.
The County Health Council will hold a public meeting next Monday at 7 p.m. in the administration building auditorium at Surry Community College in Dobson. Officials invite public input on future health related services for the area.
Mrs Phoebe Ann Hunter Inman of Westfield dies at 100, widow of Newell Inman, after Sunday death at a daughter’s home. Born in Surry County to John H. and Sally Ann Simmons Hunter, she was a Westfield Baptist Church member. Survived by a daughter and five sons. burial in Inman family cemetery at Pilot Mountain or Walkertown area. Funeral 2 p.m. today at Cox Funeral Chapel in Pilot Mountain.
Mrs Edward W Jones of 1018 North Street was admitted to North ern Surry Hospital on Friday as a medical patient.
Pilot Knob Volunteer Fire Department of Pilot Mountain seeks entries for its sixth annual Christmas parade set for 2 pm on December 9. Parade committee chairman Wayne Bowman leads Harold Moser and Phillip Whitaker inviting churches businesses civic clubs Scout troops and individuals to register floats and units by contacting Moser or Whitaker.
Dwight Coleman reported to police that a group of wrenches and tools disappeared from his toolbox at Taylor's Garage on an afternoon. The items valued at $30 remain under investigation by Mount Air police.
George Hayes 04 of route 6 Mount Airy died Saturday at home. Funeral services were held at Ladonia Baptist Church. He was born in Surry County to John and Elizabeth Hayes, a retired merchant and farmer, and the oldest Ladonia Baptist Church member serving as trustee and deacon. Surviving wife Deere Giles Hayes, a daughter Kester Simcox of Lowgap, seven sons Cody, John, Welch, George, A H Hayes of Sarasota, D L Hayes of Richmond, and Raymond Hayes of Washington, plus two sisters.
Funeral services for Grover Cleveland Cockerham 79 of Mount Airy were held at Moody Funeral Chapel. He died Saturday at Mountain View Rest Home in Dobson. He was a World War I veteran and a retired barber. Surviving are a sister Mrs Ben Turney of Wytheville and two brothers Lee Cockerham Rural Hall and Fred Cockerham Belews Creek. Burial was in Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery in Lowgap.
Red Bank Buriten Club sponsors a Saturday turkey shoot beginning at 11 pm. The event offers shotgun and rifle targets with prizes for participants. Proceeds support club activities at the building site.
