The funeral for John Harvey Parries 48 of 215 F Poplar St Mount Airy will be held today at 10 30 a m at Moody General chapel. He died Wednesday at Northern Surry Hospital. Born in Surry County to Oscar and Susan Harris Parries he was a retired grocer and a member of First Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife Mrs Wace Greenwood Parries a son Johnny W Parries a brother George Parries and a sister Mrs Gert Branson. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.

North Surry High hosts its annual Kiwanis Pas cake Jamboree from 5 to 8 pm with all you can eat pancakes and drinks to raise funds for school projects. Kiwanis members cook and serve while students help with cleanup and direct traffic in the parking lots. A concurrent English Department book fair runs during the event and into the next three days.

Truck Plunges Into Dan River Injuring Mount Airy Driver
A Mount Airy truck driver, John Edward Boyd, 42, became trapped in his cab when his vehicle crossed NC 103 near the Little Dan River bridge and plunged into the river. Rescuers fought cold water for about three hours to free him, while onlookers supplied pain relief and aid. Boyd remained conscious, was rescued with a shattered leg, and was transported to hospital in serious but stable condition.

Jaycee Head To Speak Here At Mount Airy Meeting
Edwin Samuel Melvin of Greensboro head of the North Carolina Junior Jaycees and state chairman of the People to People grant will speak at the Mount Airy Jaycees meeting Thursday night at 6 45 at Kay's Starlite Restaurant. He will discuss a state project aiding Bolivia by funding schools and hospitals among other efforts. The 32 year old Jaycee is vice president of the North Carolina National Bank in Greensboro. Casey Given Pleads Guilty in Involuntary Manslaughter Case
Casey Given, 54, of Devotion Community, jailed since August on murder change, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in Surry Superior Court. Judge Walter E. Criveman sentenced him to eight years. The death of William Garfield Owens, about 60, July 18, in a Casey home, prompted the case after a coroners inquest and fear in the community.
