GOP completes sweeping victory in Surry County races
The 1972 general election produced a decisive GOP sweep in Surry County with about 16 000 voters of 25 000 registered casting ballots. Thefts Traced To Trailer Court Three Arrested
Three residents of a North Franklin Road trailer court are jailed in Dobson facing four counts each of receiving stolen goods. Detective Fritz Booker and Deputy Belton found items from Flat Rock Beulah and North Surry Schools in George Wood’s Gillespie Trailer Park home. Bond set at 400 dollars for each suspect. trial scheduled November 16 in Surry District Court.

Starr Ends 30-Year Career As Fireman
Otto Starr retires after 30 years with Mount Airy Fire Department begun October 5 1942 with two engines and 22 men now four pumpers and expanded crew. He operated a refrigeration service and recalls rising sirens prompting reflexive responses. Starr suffered one major incident in 1947 when civilians abandoned him at a fire, and a torn knee briefly sidelined him. Fire Chief Bill Joe Woodruff honors him with a bronze plaque at the Rockford Street station. Hugh Speight is promoted.

Donna Vaughn known as Miss Yvonne Vaughn of Mount Airy receives formal recognition from the Mount Airy board of commissioners. The native singer earned top honors in Nashville for best song writer best album and best single of the year and was named most promising female vocalist in 1969 by the Country Music Academy. The commission applauded her success and invited a visit to Mount Airy, awarding the Key to the City.
