A memorial service for Private Nathan C. Draughn age 20 killed in action in Belgium on September 5 will be held at Rockford Street Methodist Church Sunday at 7 30 PM. Ministers Rev C E Williams Rev W L McFarland and Rev Edward M Graham will speak with special music. He is survived by wife Mildred and eight month old daughter Sylvia Ann and his parents and siblings from Mount Airy White Plains Dallas Draughn Leonard Draughn Sidney Draughn Lester Draughn Mrs Troy Marion Mrs Lacy Forrest and Bessie Emily Marie Draughn. Draughn earned a Combat Infantryman Badge and enlisted December 2 1943 serving one year and three days.

13 Year Old Held For Murder In Mount Airy Shooting
Cecil Ayers a 13 year old Franklin High School pupil is held in jail charged with the fatal shooting of John Tate 32 at Tate's home two miles west of Mount Airy. Tate died from a gunshot wound after reportedly telling Ayers to leave. Tate leaves a wife two brothers and three sisters. Ayers' Army father arrived this week to aid in his defense.

George Thomas Taylor Dies in Pilot Mountain
George Thomas Taylor 29 of this city died Friday morning at his parents home in Pilot Mountain. A World War veteran he worked for Liggett and Myers Tobacco Co. He is survived by his parents Tom and Mary Robertson Taylor a daughter Lois Jane Taylor two brothers James and Charles and a sister Mrs Kate McKinney. Funeral was Sunday at 3 p m at Moody Chapel with Rev Delmar Hodges officiating and burial in Oakdale Cemetery.

Enemy Trophies Attract Attention In County
Display of two German parachutes and Japanese articles captured by allied forces drew wide interest in the county this week. Parachutes from France sent by Lt. Boise Macon and by Sgt. Wilson Comer were viewed at Hollingsworth drug store and on the courthouse square election day. Articles recovered by Set. E. K. Chappel in Saipan included a bayonet knife money powder and a silk hangman’s cord and were sent to his mother in the city.

Two Pilot Mountain women, Alma Joyce and Bertha Covington, were injured in a Cherry Street Extension crash returning from work at National Carbon Company. Joyce, with a skull injury, was listed serious but resting comfortably. Covington sustained a fractured arm and foot and was described as doing nicely. The truck was driven by Lee Gwynn of Fancy Gap Virginia.

Mr and Mrs Robert Hicks of Mount Airy Route 2 received a War Department notice and a handwritten August 17 note confirming their son Private Robert C Hicks is a prisoner of war of the German government. Hicks, who joined the service November 1942, served in the glider infantry with the 101 Airborne Division and has been missing in action since June 14 after taking part in the invasion. He trained at Fort Bragg and has been overseas since September 1943.
