Kenneth A. Smith, a 30 year old bachelor attorney, defeated incumbent J C McKenzie 315 to 189 to win a two year mayoral term in Pilot Mountain. Officials later corrected machine records and deemed Smith the winner amid a high county turnout. The vote also produced two new commissioners and affected bonds and beverage measures.

Security Guard Reports Fire-Tailed UFO Over I-77 South
A 57 year old night security guard on the I-77 south of Dobson reports seeing a fire tail UFO about 9 40 p m Tuesday near Poplar Springs. He said the object hovered at about 1000 feet with a 50 foot tail leaving a burnt match smell while the radio malfunctioned. He and his companion say they saw the object on two prior occasions from Elkin toward the unfinished interstate.
