Prisoners Escape Trigger Nimble Hunt Across Virginia
Excitement and danger filled the area as policemen highway patrolmen and deputies searched for two Hillsville jail escapees Wayne Pell Joyce and Charles Lee Bowers. Joyce had previously escaped Wytheville jail and used a concealed gun to disarm deputies. The trio abducted a trooper hostage and stole a patrol car then fled toward West Virginia before being stopped by Giles County Deputy Sandy Hardy in a 1968 vehicle near Hillaville.

Arrests Reported Near Pearisbury Virginia Over Weekend
Thirty eight arrests were recorded with three new cases surrendered near Pearisbury Virginia late Sunday. They were returned to Hillsville jail where new charges are being prepared on Mount Airy Police records. Over the weekend there were 17 arrests by officers 13 by highway patrolmen and eight by deputies. Fourteen involved auto law infractions 11 were prior law violations and the remainder miscellaneous offenses.

Heathcote Dies Former Lyon President 74 in Florida
Funeral rites for Frank Heathcote 74 of Jupiter Florida will be held at 1030 today at Trinity Episcopal Church Mount Airy. He died Saturday in a West Palm Beach hospital. He was formerly president of Lynn Hosiery Mills until retirement seven years ago and helped establish the mill 25 years ago. Born in Brooklyn he was survived by his wife Helen and son B F Heathcote and a brother Edward. Pallbearers listed and burial at Oakdale Cemetery.
