Surry County voters backed a full slate of Democratic officials with a light turnout and broad support across the county. Sheriff John D. Thompson led with 2 366 votes, W M Grey for register of deeds 2 354, and Fred Folger for state senate attorney carried the county with 2 342. Mount Airy and Westfield showed shifts toward Democrats as turnout fell from 10 554 total votes countywide.

Farmer's Tobacco Stolen At Night In Mount Airy Area
Unknown persons broke into the tobacco barn of Joe Holt and Frank Hayden at A bury and stole about 490 pounds of high grade tobacco. A car had backed to the door to load the tobacco, and Holt and Hayden reported the loss to Mount Airy warehouses with no clues found.

Jack McKenzie Struck by Car Near Quarry
Jack McKenzie a paving cutter living near the quarry was hit by an automobile while walking along the highway last Friday night. He suffered a broken wrist and head bruises and was briefly semi conscious after his head struck a railroad rail. The car occupants stopped, but he cannot identify them. he recalls the car had one light burning and that they quickly left the scene.

Power Line To Quarry Blown Down
High wind this week in this section blew down the high voltage line to the quarry. A line of 22 poles from Bailey's shed to the railroad bridge across Ararat river collapsed at 12 20 PM under heavy load. Guy wires snapped and wires tangled. An extra line crew from local utilities arrived to repair the damage.

Robert C. Browne Jr., 15, died Tuesday night at Martin Memorial Hospital after illness began two days earlier. He was the eldest son of Mrs. Robert C. Browne and the late, active in school and Boy Scouts. Funeral Friday at 10 AM Holy Angel Catholic Church with burial at Oakdale Cemetery. Survived by mother and nine siblings.

Prisoners Escape City Jail Through Window After Sawed Bars
Four inmates escaped from the city jail when they sawed through two steel bars measuring three quarters of an inch. Floyd Peele reported the breakout as the men fled down East Oak Street. Among the escapees were Clifford Ward, Ellis Horton, a Black man jailed for a minor offense, and Charlie Anderson on a capital crime charge.
