The Mount Airy market will allow buyers from all major tobacco companies to complete sales at all five warehouses five days weekly through the season. After a holiday price rise, more leaf is on the floor and officials expect the 1940 crop to sell before Thanksgiving. The market will close next Monday, November 11.

J B Sparger Confined After Slight Stroke
J B Sparger longtime Surry County orchardist and former Mount Airy postmaster is confined in Martin Memorial Hospital after a slight stroke Sunday night. Hospital officials reported he was resting comfortably and in fair condition on Thursday. Sparger also served as highway commission chairman for years and managed Sparger Orchard Company.

Granville B. Marshall, 92, of Carroll County Virginia, voted the Democratic ticket at Laurel Fork last Tuesday, marking his 17th consecutive presidential ballot. Guy Byerly Wins Carolina Honor
Guy Byerly of Mount Airy won the freshman honor award of Phi Kappa Sigma at the University of North Carolina. The award recognizes highest grades, fraternity interest, and varied abilities. A bronze 18 inch statue was presented, and Byerly is noted as the first Southern student to win the honor. He is a sophomore who earned two letters in track and basketball last year.

W M Sparger Buried At Salem Church
The remains of W Munsey Sparger died Friday in Salisbury were brought to Salem for a hour in state at Salem Methodist Church before a 3:00 P M Masonic interment. He served with Atlantic and Yadkin Railways and Southern Railway since 1903. He was 60, survived by wife Annie Ashby and three children Virginia John Whitfield and daughter Mrs Ed Lyerly. The Spencer funeral preceded the visit.
