Three sewing rooms will be opened in Surry County under W. P. A. to provide work for 64 workers. The local shop will employ 30 to 36 workers with several extra machines needed. Secretary Injured In Cana Va Auto Crash
Mrs. Lowman Edwards of Cana Va suffered a broken right ankle in a Sunday afternoon collision that involved Bob Branscombe of Hillsville Va. Edwards, driver, and two passengers were unharmed. Branscombe had two women with him. Edwards works for John Comer, County Superintendent of Schools, and her husband drives for Fowler Motor Co. of Mount Airy. She was taken to Martin Memorial Hospital for treatment and the fracture is not a compound one.

Local Man In Critical Condition After Crash Near Galax
Fred Jarrell of this city is reported in critical condition after a collision between his new pickup and a state highway truck on the road between Longap and Sparta Tuesday afternoon. His left arm was broken in three places, removed after surgery, and doctors welded the bones before amputation Wednesday morning. Jarrell, proprietor of a small store and filling station near Mount Airy-Lowgap road, was later said to have a fever but a chance to recover. The state truck driver was reportedly at fault.

Man Captured With 60 Gallons Moonshine Near Westfield
Eldridge Vaughn a 25 year old rumrunner from Slate Mountain was seized by Surry officers last Friday night with about 60 gallons of liquor. He was released on 500 bond after appeal, following a guilty verdict and a twelve month sentence before Judge H H Lewellyn. Officers Chief Deputy H S Bord and Deputy E H Jones made the arrest as they watched a nearby place. The car had the back seat removed and contained twelve five gallon cans of moonshine.

Tobacco sales rise as Mount Airy markets top half a million pounds
Tobacco growers on the Mount Airy market sold 524,068 pounds through three local warehouses since October 31. The week’s average price reached 21.16 cents per pound, lifting the season average to 20.53 cents. Totals for the season stand at 3,035,046 pounds and $622,278.70 paid. Wrapper prices go to 70 cents, with fancy cutters in demand, though many lots suffer from poor grading.

Farmer Breaks Leg In Fall From Barn
