John D Thompson Dies After Stroke At 80 In Mount Airy
John D Thompson 80 merchant, former Surry County sheriff and Mount Airy mayor, died Tuesday morning at Martin Memorial Hospital after a severe stroke. Born December 26, 1871 in Patrick County Virginia, he moved to Mount Airy, built Thompson Furniture Co and later partnered with Roy Hutchens and the late William Allred. He served three terms as sheriff from 1930 to 1936 and four terms as mayor from 1937 to 1945, known for his compulsion for lawful administration and support of younger generations. He survived by three grandchildren.
